The Mexican Cession occurred after the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed in 1848. After losing the Mexican-American War, Mexico sold land in the southwest to the United States. The U.S. paid Mexico $15 million dollars for 525,000 square miles of land, which included California, Nevada, Utah, and parts of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming.
