audio buttonToday, we will learn about prefixes and suffixes, and how they help us make new words. When we use a prefix or a suffix, we add it to a "root" or "base" word to change its meaning. We use prefixes and suffixes to make word magic!

audio buttonA prefix is a special word-part that we add to the beginning of a word to change its meaning. A suffix is a word-part that we add to the end of a word to change its meaning. They are like the start and finish of a word.

Like

If we add the prefix "dis-" to the word like, we get dislike.

Dis+like = dislike

Dislike means DON'T like. The prefix dis- changes the meaning of our word. If you dislike hot dogs, you don't like them. Let's try a suffix.

audio buttonA suffix that we add to words often is -ing. "-Ing" means "happening right now." Walk. If we add -ing to walk, we get walking.

Walk+ing = walking

Walking means that you are doing it right now!

Re-: "Re-" means to do something again.

Reread a book means to read a book over again. Replay means to play something again. Rewrite means something gets written again. Can you think of some re- words?

-ful. "-Ful" means to be full of.

Color. Color+ful=Colorful.

Colorful means something is full with color. Like a rainbow or fireworks!

Help. Help+ful=Helpful.

Helpful means to be full of help. When you clean your room, you are being very helpful!
