Skill acquisition is a process used by athletes to learn or acquire a new skill. A skill is a task--something you can perform. In the sports world, a skill can include throwing, catching, dribbling, kicking, jumping, and running.
Take a moment to remember when you learned a new skill. What were you thinking about when you were told to perform that task? You acquired most motor skills when you were younger, but that doesn't mean you can't acquire new ones. A sixty-year-old woman may never have had an opportunity to learn how to do the backstroke, but that doesn't mean it's too late.
Skill acquisition is a process. Processes require us to develop something from scratch. In order words, processes are gradual. To start the skill acquisition process, you should first begin to think about the skill and the physical abilities needed and then work towards performing the skill. As you learn a new skill, it is important for you to understand how to peak at your performance. It is essential that you comprehend the learning process, be able to analyze how well the skill was performed, and be able to identify how the skill can be improved upon.
