They will recognize high-frequency words and apply letter-sound knowledge to decode CVC words using the Decodable Book. Learning Coach Notes:
| Lesson # | Lesson Title | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 6.1 Letter Nn | The phoneme /n/ can be a tricky one to learn to pronounce. After learning how to make the sound, if your learner still struggles with correct pronunciation, you can try the lollipop trick. Use a lollipop to touch the top part of the mouth, where the tip of the tongue touches to produce the /n/ sound. The taste sensation can help your learner know where to place their tongue, which aids in sound production. Provide many opportunities for your child to practice this phoneme during the lesson and throughout the day. Ask questions such as “What is your new letter? What sound does it make? Can you tell me words that start with /n/?” |
| 2 | 6.2 Letter Nn | As your learner practices listening for the middle sound in words, remember that repetition is key! As you go about your day, come back to this skill periodically to ask your child to find the middle sound in CVC words. Help your learner notice the spaces between words as you look at a recipe to cook dinner or read aloud with your child. This helps to continually reinforce the skills your child is learning. |
| 3 | 6.3 Letter Nn | Help your learner practice the skill of story retells by asking them to retell familiar stories. Help your learner use the five-finger retell strategy to retell each part of the story. With repeated practice, the skill of story retells will become more natural. Continue to practice identifying middle sounds in CVC words throughout the day. |
| 4 | 6.4 Letter Nn | Continue practicing the /n/ phoneme with your learner by noticing words that begin with the letter n. These may be words that you use in conversation or words you see on road signs. Help your learner practice rhyming words and listening for word family words by providing words and asking the child to say a word that rhymes. Use words in the -at, -an, and -am word families and ask your learner which word family the rhyming words fit in. Example: What word rhymes with pan. Fan! Which word family do they belong in? The -an word family. |
| 5 | 6.5 Letter Nn | After the scavenger hunt, in this lesson, ask your learner additional questions about words that begin with the /n/ phoneme. Provide words such as noodles, never, no, and November and ask your child to identify the beginning sound. Allow time for your learner to retell the Module Story and show you their handwriting letters. During the retelling, prompt your child if needed, using the five-finger retell strategy. Encourage repeated reading of the decodable book. |
