Module 14: Jobs in the Community-Language Arts 3 - Course Guide

Module Overview:

In this module, learners will explore "Jobs in the Community" while strengthening their language and writing skills. We will focus on new spelling patterns for the long "e" sound and discover how to interpret the hidden meanings behind idioms. A key goal for this unit is for learners to understand cause-and-effect relationships in the stories and nonfiction texts they read. In our writing time, learners will work through the full process of writing a cause-and-effect essay—from planning with graphic organizers to drafting, revising, and publishing their final work. Additionally, we will continue to refine our cursive handwriting with practice on the uppercase letters A and O.

Learning Coach Notes:

Lesson # Lesson Title Notes
1 14.1 Jobs in the Community Students will continue building their literacy skills while learning new concepts this week. They will learn three new long e vowel teams and spelling patterns. These spelling patterns can be tricky to learn as they do not consistently follow a rule. Have your learner work with this week’s words in hands-on ways by making flashcards together that can be sorted by the spelling of the long e vowel team. Students will also learn about idioms this week. Point out examples of idioms in speech and in books to reinforce your learner’s understanding of this type of figurative language.
2 14.2 Jobs in the Community Students will continue learning the long e vowel teams ie, ey, and ei. If your learner did not make flashcards with the spelling words on them yesterday, take time together to make them today. Have your learner sort the words by vowel team. Students will continue learning about idioms. To expand understanding, guide your learner to look up different idioms and their meanings. Encourage them to use idioms throughout the day, or prompt them to replace words or phrases they use with idioms that convey the meaning. Some idioms are funny, when learners really think about them (“raining cats and dogs”), so talk with your learner about the humor in these common sayings.
3 14.3 Jobs in the Community Students will dive deeper into their learning today by thinking critically about the texts they read. Encourage your learner to take time to think through their answers to ensure thoughtful responses. Ask follow-up questions to help them engage more deeply with what they are learning. Students will read a short text about other important, although less well-known, community jobs. As your learner reads the text, encourage them to talk about what they are reading and guide them to identify causes and effects before answering the questions about the text.
4 14.4 Jobs in the Community Students will hone their skills with the new concepts learned this week through online interactive and hands-on activities. To reinforce these skills, ask your learner to say a sentence using each vocabulary word to demonstrate a solid understanding of the meaning. If your learner uses the word incorrectly, discuss why the word does not fit in the sentence by asking questions. Use idioms in daily language or find examples and create sentences that use them. Ask your learner to explain why the idiom strengthens the meaning of the sentence or adds interest or clarity.
5 14.5 Jobs in the Community Students can demonstrate their understanding of the skills learned this week by completing the activities. For extra practice and reinforcement, have your learner act out the meaning of each vocabulary word for you or a partner to guess the word. To practice cause-and-effect relationships, give your learner a cause (the plants on the porch are wilted) and have them think of effects (without water, the plants may wither). To review their understanding of idioms, say a sentence with an incorrect idiom and have your learner suggest an idiom that fits the sentence’s meaning.

Module Guiding Questions:

When a student starts a lesson ask them questions to check for prior knowledge and understanding and to review concepts being taught. At the end of the lesson ask the questions again to see if their answer changes.

Module Suggested Read Aloud Books:

Take time to read to your student or have them read aloud to you. Read a different book each day. While reading the book point out concepts being taught. You may purchase these books or find them at your local library. Suggested things to discuss while reading the book:

 • What is the main idea?
 • What are three things new you learned?
 • How does this book relate to what you are learning about?
