Module 1: My Adventures-Language Arts 3 - Course Guide

Module Overview:

This module builds learners’ literacy skills through phonics, vocabulary, reading, and writing. Learners will apply spelling generalizations to read and spell words with trigraphs and use context clues and synonyms to determine and expand vocabulary. They will develop comprehension by describing story elements and theme and making inferences about characters, setting, and plot. Learners will strengthen their understanding of sentence structure by distinguishing complete sentences from fragments and applying correct conventions. Through the writing process, learners will draft, revise, edit, and publish a summary, analyzing and improving their work. They will also develop cursive handwriting skills, including proper formation of lowercase letters c and a, resulting in a cohesive learning experience that supports confident and effective readers and writers.

1 1.1 My Adventures Students will be introduced to the skills and new concepts they will learn and practice all week. It can be helpful to make posters for spelling words, WOW words, and vocabulary words so that these new words are constantly visible to your learner throughout the week. Students will spend time with the Module Story and complete comprehension and writing activities using the Module Story. The writing activity will continue in each lesson so that the final project is completed on the last day of the module.
2 1.2 My Adventures Students will practice the skills introduced yesterday. Ensure that your learner carefully reads the Module Story again today. The practice of re-reading a story is crucial in developing comprehension skills. Incorporate the use of new vocabulary words in conversation with your learner throughout the week and encourage them to note WOW words and spelling words they see in texts.
3 1.3 My Adventures Students will continue to practice the new skills they are learning this week. You can extend your learner’s understanding by applying skills outside the lesson. This could involve finding the setting in different stories and discussing their influence on the plot. You can also give your learner sentence fragments orally and ask them to turn the fragments into complete sentences.
4 1.4 My Adventures Encourage your learner to practice telling a story summary of multiple familiar stories. Not all spelling words are practiced in the Save the Burger interactive. If your learner needs additional practice with the words, have them use the Language Arts Notebook to write this week’s words.
5 1.5 My Adventures As students use pictures to identify vocabulary words, have your learner tell you what the picture shows. If your learner struggles to match the picture with a vocabulary word, ask questions such as What is happening in the picture? and How do you think the children are feeling? Students will also read or listen to another fiction story to practice their comprehension skills. Encourage your learner to read the story at least twice before answering the questions. Refer them back to the story to prove their answers.

Module Guiding Questions:

When a student starts a lesson ask them questions to check for prior knowledge and understanding and to review concepts being taught. At the end of the lesson ask the questions again to see if their answer changes.
