Lesson # Lesson Title Notes
35.1 oi, oy This week, students will learn the /oi/ sound spelled oy or oi. In today’s lesson, students will blend sounds to make /oi/ words. You can practice this with your learner by giving them the sounds in an /oi/ word and asking them to blend the sounds and say the word. For example, give them the sounds to /b/ /oi/ /l/. Your learner should repeat the sounds, blend them, and then say the word boil. Students will also learn to spell /oi/ words with oi and oy. Point out words that have these spellings as you come across them in read-alouds with your learner.
35.2 oi, oy In this lesson, students will practice the /oi/sound spelled with oi and oy. Students will listen to a word and then segment the word into phonemes. They will identify the middle vowel sound in the word. You can practice this with your learner by giving them a word, then asking them to identify the middle vowel sound. Give your learner words with the /oi/ sound, like choice or point. Students will also practice reading oi and oy words. You can practice this with your learner by writing words on note cards. Then, have your child read the word aloud and sort the words by oi or oy.
35.3 oi, oy In this lesson, students will practice the /oi/ sound spelled with oy and oi. Students will be asked to add an end sound to a word or sound part to create a new word. You can continue practicing this with your learner by orally giving them a sound part or word like toy and then asking them to add an end sound like /l/. Then, ask what the new word is: toil. Students will also practice reading oi and oy words. You can practice by writing oi and oy words on note cards and asking your learner to decode the words. Continue reviewing the Words of the Week, vocabulary words, and spelling words with your child as well.
35.4 oi, oy In this lesson, students will practice substituting an end sound in a word to create a new word. You can extend this practice with your learner by giving them a word aloud and asking them to substitute the ending sound for a new one. Then, ask them to say the new word. Students will also continue reading oi and oy words.
35.5 oi, oy In this lesson, students will identify rhyming /oi/ words. You can expand this skill with your learner by giving them a word aloud and then asking them to say a word that rhymes. Generating a rhyming word is an advanced skill, and if your learner struggles with it, you can provide them with two word choices from which to select a rhyming word. Students will also practice reading sentences with oi and oy words. You can extend this practice by writing more simple sentences that contain Words of the Week or other words following phonics patterns your learner is familiar with. Include oi and oy words in your sentences. Ask your learner to decode the sentence. Then, ask questions that test their comprehension of the sentence. Practice spelling words to prepare your child for the spelling test. Additionally, review the Words of the Week. Ask your learner to read them aloud and use them in a sentence.
