Module 6- Math K A - Course Guide
Module Overview:
In this module, students will explore basic two-dimensional shapes, including circles, squares, rectangles, and triangles. They will learn to identify and describe these shapes in both isolation and in their environment, using shape names accurately. Students will also practice describing where shapes and objects are located by using position words such as above, below, beside, in front of, behind, and next to. Through hands-on activities and observation, learners will build a strong understanding of shapes and their positions in space, helping them connect geometry concepts to the world around them.

Learning Coach Notes:
| Lesson # | Lesson Title | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Squares and Rectangles | Provide your learner with a variety of objects and cutouts that are squares and rectangles, such as books, boxes, or paper pieces. Encourage them to look carefully at each object and describe its features, such as the number of sides and corners. Ask them to sort the objects into two groups—squares and rectangles—while explaining why each object belongs in its group. You can also take a walk around the home or classroom and have your learner point out real-world squares and rectangles, reinforcing their ability to recognize and describe these shapes in everyday life. |
| 2 | Circles and Triangles | Provide your learner with a variety of objects and cutouts that are circles and triangles, such as plates, coins, or paper shapes. Encourage them to look carefully at each object and describe its features, such as the number of sides and corners. Ask them to sort the objects into two groups—circles and triangles—while explaining why each object belongs in its group. You can also explore the environment together, pointing out real-world examples of circles and triangles, like clock faces, traffic signs, or windows, to reinforce their ability to identify and describe these shapes in everyday life. |
| 3 | The Shape of It | Provide your learner with a collection of basic 2D shapes—circles, squares, rectangles, and triangles—using cutouts, blocks, or household items. Encourage them to describe each shape by talking about the number of sides, corners, and overall appearance. Ask your learner to sort the shapes into groups and explain their reasoning. You can also take a walk around the home or classroom, pointing out real-world examples of each shape, and have your learner identify and describe them. This hands-on exploration helps reinforce shape recognition and descriptive language. |
| 4 | Shapes and Their Position | Encourage your learner to explore the environment around them and describe objects using shape names and their positions. For example, point out a round clock on the wall or a rectangular table and ask your learner to describe its shape and location. Use position words such as above, below, beside, in front of, behind, and next to while discussing objects. You can make it interactive by asking your learner to place a toy or shape in a specific position relative to another object, then describe it aloud. Incorporating everyday items and movements helps them practice both shape recognition and spatial language in meaningful ways. |
| 5 | Module 6 Wrap Up | Provide your learner with a variety of shapes, including squares, rectangles, circles, triangles, and hexagons, using cutouts, blocks, or everyday objects. Encourage them to look closely at each shape and describe its features, such as the number of sides, corners, and overall appearance. Ask your learner to name each shape aloud and describe its position using words like above, below, beside, in front of, behind, and next to. You can also explore the home or classroom to find real-world examples of these shapes, prompting your learner to identify and describe both the shape and its location. |
Module Guiding Questions:
When a student starts a lesson ask them questions to check for prior knowledge and understanding and to review concepts being taught. At the end of the lesson ask the questions again to see if their answer changes.

Module Video Questions:
When a student watches a video take time to ask them questions about what they watched. Suggested questions for the videos in this module are listed here. Suggestion: Have the student watch the entire video first all the way through. Then have them watch the video a second time, as they watch it pause the video and ask the questions.

Module Suggested Read Aloud Books:
Take time to read to your student or have them read aloud to you. Read a different book each day. While reading the book point out concepts being taught. You may purchase these books or find them at your local library. Suggested things to discuss while reading the book:
- What is the main idea?
- What are three things new you learned?
- How does this book relate to what you are learning about?
