Module 35: Poetry Slam-Language Arts 2 - Course Guide

Module Overview:

In this module, learners build reading and language skills by identifying and classifying words with the suffixes -tion and -sion, developing fluency with grade-level text, and using context clues and word meanings to understand and apply new vocabulary in sentences. They explore free verse poetry by identifying and citing poetry devices and analyzing how they are used in poems. In writing, learners plan with a graphic organizer, draft, revise, and publish their own free verse poems. Learners also strengthen grammar skills by identifying collective nouns and classifying irregular plural nouns, while demonstrating proper letter formation of cursive uppercase B and Q.

1	ELA 2 35.1 Poetry Slam	Students will practice and review skills already learned and learn new information this week. Encourage you learner to use their new vocabulary words in conversations all week. Students will learn the suffixes -tion and -sion. As you read and speak with your learner this week, make connections to point out these suffixes at the end of words. Students will also learn how to write a free verse poem. Read some free verse poems with your learner before they brainstorm their poem to help them understand this type of poem.
2	ELA 2 35.2 Poetry Slam	Ask your learner to point out the -sion and -tion suffixes in words they see in their reading this week to reinforce this suffix. You and your learner can also create a poster for them to list words in each column by suffix to provide extra practice. If your learner struggles to draft their free verse poem, encourage them to get their ideas down on paper first and then go back and add sensory details and figurative language later.
3	ELA 2 35.3 Poetry Slam	If your learner struggles with this week’s spelling words, help them find the root word and apply the spelling rule to determine which suffix should be used. As the lesson makes connections between vocabulary words and real life, encourage your learner to share words’ connections to their own life. During revision of their poem, encourage your learner to create a stronger mental image using sensory details and figurative language.
4	ELA 2 35.4 Poetry Slam	As students continue to review the skills learned this week, remind your learner to think of the root word when spelling words with the suffixes -tion and -sion and to follow the spelling rules. Students will use their understanding of vocabulary words to fill in the blanks in a passage. Encourage your learner to guess the meaning of the missing word so that they can determine which word is missing. Students will also edit their poems to check for grammatical and spelling errors.
5	ELA 2 35.5 Poetry Slam	Students will perform the Module Story poem in preparation for performing their own poem at the end of the lesson. You can coach your learner by giving them feedback as they perform the Module Story poem so that they are better prepared to perform their own.
