Module 8- Math K A - Course Guide
Module Overview:
In this module, your learner will explore and deepen their understanding of shapes and attributes. They will identify and describe 3-D shapes, compare them, and recognize patterns by copying simple designs. Learners will practice sorting and grouping objects by color, shape, and size, as well as comparing two objects based on measurable attributes such as length, height, or weight. These activities help learners develop critical thinking, observation, and classification skills while building a strong foundation in geometry and early math reasoning.

Learning Coach Notes:
| Lesson # | Lesson Title | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 3-D Shapes | You can support your learner in identifying 3-D shapes by pointing out real-world examples during everyday activities. Encourage your learner to notice shapes in objects around the house, such as a ball (sphere), a cereal box (cube or rectangular prism), or a can (cylinder). Ask your learner to name each shape and describe how it looks, including its flat or curved surfaces. Using toys, blocks, or household items, have your learner sort objects by shape and discuss what makes each one unique. These simple observations help your learner recognize and name 3-D shapes in their environment. |
| 2 | Comparing 3-D Shapes | You can help your learner describe and compare 3-D shapes by examining objects around the home. Ask your learner to notice and talk about the features of shapes, such as how many faces, edges, or corners they have, or whether surfaces are flat or curved. Encourage them to compare two objects by discussing similarities and differences—for example, how a can (cylinder) and a box (rectangular prism) are alike and how they are different. Using toys, blocks, or everyday items makes this exploration hands-on and helps your learner understand shape characteristics while building vocabulary and reasoning skills. |
| 3 | Patterns with Shapes | You can support your learner in copying patterns and sorting objects by providing hands-on, everyday opportunities. For patterns, create simple sequences using toys, blocks, or colored items, and ask your learner to continue or replicate the pattern. Encourage them to describe what comes next and explain the sequence. For sorting, provide a variety of objects and ask your learner to group them by color, shape, or size. Discuss the reasons for each grouping and ask questions like, “Which items are the same color?” or “Which is the biggest?” These activities help your learner recognize patterns, develop organizational skills, and understand similarities and differences among objects. |
| 4 | Sorting and Grouping | You can help your learner practice comparing and classifying objects by exploring everyday items. Encourage your learner to compare two objects based on measurable attributes such as length, height, weight, or volume, asking questions like, “Which one is taller?” or “Which one is heavier?” For classification, provide a variety of objects and have your learner group them by color, shape, or size. Ask them to explain their reasoning for each group to reinforce understanding. These hands-on activities strengthen observation, critical thinking, and early math skills while making learning practical and engaging. |
| 5 | Module 8 Wrap Up | You can help your learner explore 3-D shapes and practice sorting skills through everyday activities. Encourage your learner to identify and describe shapes they see around the home, such as a ball (sphere), a box (cube or rectangular prism), or a can (cylinder), and talk about their features like flat or curved surfaces. Provide a variety of objects and ask your learner to sort and group them by color, shape, or size, explaining the reasons for each group. These hands-on activities support observation, classification, and early math reasoning while making learning engaging and practical. |
Module Guiding Questions:
When a student starts a lesson ask them questions to check for prior knowledge and understanding and to review concepts being taught. At the end of the lesson ask the questions again to see if their answer changes.

Module Video Questions:
When a student watches a video take time to ask them questions about what they watched. Suggested questions for the videos in this module are listed here. Suggestion: Have the student watch the entire video first all the way through. Then have them watch the video a second time, as they watch it pause the video and ask the questions.

Module Suggested Read Aloud Books:
Take time to read to your student or have them read aloud to you. Read a different book each day. While reading the book point out concepts being taught. You may purchase these books or find them at your local library. Suggested things to discuss while reading the book:
- What is the main idea?
- What are three things new you learned?
- How does this book relate to what you are learning about?
