Module 35: Long u- Language Arts K - Course Guide


Module Overview:

In this module, students will learn to recognize the /long u/ sound with the silent e spelling pattern and practice writing and spelling words that follow this pattern. They will read and use the high-frequency words out, who, and new and expand their vocabulary. Students will strengthen phonics skills by working with the blends sp, st, sl, and sw, segmenting syllables, and decoding words in the Decodable Book with fluency. In reading, they will identify characters, setting, and major events in stories and practice retelling using the five-finger retell strategy. Students will also explore persuasive texts, learning to recognize how an author tries to convince the reader.

1 35.1 Long U In this module, students will learn that the letter u makes the /long u/ sound. Students will learn some words that begin with the /long u/ sound. They will also learn the long u silent e spelling pattern. Help your learner make connections with this new phoneme by listening for words with the /long u/ sound in them all week. Your child will also use context clues from the Module Story to learn six new vocabulary words.
2 35.2 Long U Students will continue learning about the /long u/ phoneme. Students will practice counting syllables in multisyllabic words. They will practice identifying the parts of a story using the Module Story and then continue working on their writing project by writing the conclusion. You may wish to provide a break before writing so that your learner is fresh to tackle a more challenging task.
3 35.3 Long U In this lesson, students will continue practicing the /long u/ phoneme. They will count phonemes in words and practice spelling words and words of the week. Use the Words of the Week Book to help your learner continue practicing all the words they have learned. Your learner will answer comprehension questions with the Module Story and use a picture dictionary to practice vocabulary words. To practice handwriting, your child will write letters from the alphabet.
4 35.4 Long U Today, students will continue practicing the concepts and skills learned this week. Students will also learn about persuasive texts. Your learner will continue to work on their My Favorite Author Writing Project to either complete or proofread the conclusion.
5 35.5 Long U Your learner will have a short review video before demonstrating their understanding of the concepts and skills learned this week.
