Module Overview:

In this module students will learn about Native Americans and their relationship with each other. Students will learn about the end of the Susquehannock and the Algonquin tribes. Students will learn about the Iroquois and the Powhatan. Students will learn about the King Phillip's War and Lord Dunmore's War. Students will learn about the Salem Witch Trials. Students will learn about colonial craftsmen, plants and diseases. Students will learn about Spanish and French Explorers and the French and Indian War.

9 Spanish Explorers Part 2
  1. Describe the importance of the Spanish explorers in history.
  2. List the areas these explorers traveled to.
  3. Describe the impact of the French explorers.
10 French Explorers
  1. Describe the impact of the French explorers and identify the areas in which they settled.
  2. Locate the colonized areas of the Americas on a map and identify which countries claimed each area.
11 The French and Indian War
  1. Understand how the French and the British went to war to gain control over certain regions of the New World.

1 Relationships with the Native Americans
  • Each day in Social Studies, share a current news event with your student. Discuss the current event that you shared. The news can be from your community or from a place that you are currently learning about.
  • Your student will be using technology throughout all their courses. Social Studies is a good place to address Digital Citizenship and responsible tech use. Do an online search for Elementary Digital Citizenship lessons. Explore some of the websites and find one that is free. Commit to complete at least one digital citizenship lesson a week with your student during Social Studies time.
  • After completing this lesson, have your student summarize the fur trade's importance to the Dutch economy in their Social Studies notebook.
2 Devastation and Surrender Have your student summarize what happened to the Susquehannock in their Social Studies notebook.
3 The Iroquois, False Face Society, and Powhatan After learning about life in the Long House, have your student write about the similarities and differences between Iroquois life and life today in their Social Studies notebook. Discuss what they wrote.
4 War and King Philip Have your student write down the reasons the Native American’s went to war and the reasons the colonists felt the war was necessary. Discuss with them both sides and what side they feel was right.
5 Witches and The Trials Have your student write their opinion of the Salem Witch Trials in their Social Studies notebook.
6 Puritans and Colonial Trades After learning about the different colonial trades, have your student summarize the trades they learned and discuss which one they would want to do if they lived during those times in their Social Studies Notebook.
7 Trades, Plants, and Disease What were the advantages and disadvantages to what the Europeans brought with them from Europe? Have your student write their thoughts in their Social Studies notebook.
8 Spanish Explorers Part 1 Have your student write a summary of what they learned in this lesson in their Social Studies notebook.
9 Spanish Explorers Part 2 Have your student write a summary of what they learned in this lesson in their Social Studies notebook.
