Module 9-Math K A - Course Guide
Module Overview:
In this module, your learner will build confidence with numbers up to 8. They will practice writing the number 8, counting to 8, and matching numbers with sets of objects. Learners will also order numbers from 1 to 8 from smallest to largest and compare two objects based on measurable attributes, such as length, weight, or volume, to determine which has more or less. These activities help learners develop number sense, counting accuracy, and early math reasoning skills through hands-on and everyday experiences.

Learning Coach Notes:
| Lesson # | Lesson Title | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Count to 8! | You can support your learner in writing and counting the number 8 through simple, everyday activities. Encourage your learner to practice writing the number 8 using crayons, markers, or even finger tracing in sand or shaving cream. Reinforce counting to 8 by having your learner count objects such as toys, snacks, or blocks, pointing to each item as they say the number aloud. Singing counting songs or creating short movement activities, like 8 claps or 8 steps, can make counting fun and memorable. These activities help your learner develop confidence in recognizing, writing, and counting the number 8. |
| 2 | Matching Sets with Numbers | You can help your learner match numbers to sets of items by using everyday objects at home. Give your learner a small group of items, such as blocks, buttons, or snacks, and ask them to count the items and then identify the number that matches the total. You can also show a number card and ask your learner to select the correct number of objects to match it. Turning this into a game with different objects or numbers from 0 to 8 makes the activity fun and reinforces one-to-one correspondence, helping your learner connect written numbers with actual quantities. |
| 3 | Ordering Numbers | You can support your learner in ordering numbers from 1 to 8 through hands-on activities. Use number cards, blocks, or objects labeled with numbers and ask your learner to arrange them from smallest to largest. Encourage them to say each number aloud as they place it in order. You can also create fun challenges, such as mixing the numbers and timing how quickly your learner can put them in the correct sequence. These activities help your learner understand number order, strengthen counting skills, and build confidence with numbers up to 8. |
| 4 | Less and More | You can help your learner compare groups of objects by counting and identifying which has more, less, or the same number. Use everyday items such as blocks, snacks, or toys and create two small groups. Ask your learner to count each group and then determine which group has more, which has less, or if they have the same amount. Encourage them to explain their reasoning as they compare. These simple, hands-on activities build early math skills, number sense, and the ability to make accurate comparisons. |
| 5 | Module 9 Wrap Up | You can help your learner practice counting to 8 throughout everyday activities. Encourage them to count objects such as toys, blocks, or snacks, pointing to each item as they say the number aloud. Make counting playful by using songs, claps, steps, or jumps to reach 8. You can also create small challenges, like finding 8 items of a certain color or type around the room. These activities help your learner build confidence and accuracy in counting to 8 while connecting numbers to real-world objects. |
Module Guiding Questions:
When a student starts a lesson ask them questions to check for prior knowledge and understanding and to review concepts being taught. At the end of the lesson ask the questions again to see if their answer changes.

Module Video Questions:
When a student watches a video take time to ask them questions about what they watched. Suggested questions for the videos in this module are listed here. Suggestion: Have the student watch the entire video first all the way through. Then have them watch the video a second time, as they watch it pause the video and ask the questions.

Module Suggested Read Aloud Books:
Take time to read to your student or have them read aloud to you. Read a different book each day. While reading the book point out concepts being taught. You may purchase these books or find them at your local library. Suggested things to discuss while reading the book:
- What is the main idea?
- What are three things new you learned?
- How does this book relate to what you are learning about?
