Module 9: Inventions-Language Arts 3 - Course Guide

Module Overview:

In this module, learners will expand their language skills by mastering homonyms, homophones, and homographs while using context clues to build vocabulary. They will explore the vital role of asking questions before, during, and after reading to better understand texts and cite evidence. Throughout this unit, learners will develop an opinion essay—from initial planning and drafting to revising, editing, and publishing—while focusing on the correct use of irregular verb tenses, the difference between direct and indirect citation, and the refinement of their cursive handwriting for the letters h and k. The module concludes with learners comparing multiple texts on the topic of inventions and presenting their polished work to showcase their growth in both writing and oral communication.

Learning Coach Notes:

Lesson # Lesson Title Notes
1 9.1 Inventions Students will be introduced to new spelling and vocabulary words today, but the WOW words will be a review from the beginning of the year. In the review today, encourage your learner to pay close attention to words that they cannot read automatically. Those will be the words they will be instructed to create index cards for so that they can spend additional time working with them this week.
2 9.2 Inventions Students will practice asking questions before, during, and after reading with a new short text on an invention. To extend this skill, encourage your learner to practice using texts they have already read. With your learner, discuss questions they might have before they read to help them activate prior knowledge. After they read, encourage them to flip through the book to remember what they read. What questions did they have while they were reading? Encourage discussion. Finally, listen as your learner asks and answers the questions they have after they finish reading the story.
3 9.3 Inventions Students will continue sorting homophones and homographs. To help with this skill, students can make note cards with each of the words. Guide your learner to make two cards for each homograph so they can see that the words are spelled the same. Use the note cards to play a matching game with your learner, guiding them to see the different spellings in the homophones and the same spellings in the homographs. As they make each match, have them pronounce each word and clarify the difference in meaning between the words.
4 9.4 Inventions Students will continue working with direct and indirect citation as they strengthen their comprehension skills. With your learner, look through nonfiction texts at home, school, or the library to find examples of these kinds of citations. Ask your learner whether the citations are direct (quoting the text exactly) or indirect (paraphrasing the text) and how they know the difference. Study examples of direct citations to see how quotation marks are used to acknowledge words from the text and how writers introduce quoted text.
5 9.5 Inventions Students will create a recording of themselves reading their opinion writing essay. Encourage students to practice reading a few times before creating the recording. Provide feedback on their voice tone, expression, and volume specifically for a presentation. If time allows, record students and have them watch their presentation, critique themselves, and record again using what they have learned to create a quality recording.

Module Guiding Questions:

When a student starts a lesson ask them questions to check for prior knowledge and understanding and to review concepts being taught. At the end of the lesson ask the questions again to see if their answer changes.

Lesson Title Question
9.1 Inventions
  1. What are homonyms, homophones, and homographs?
9.2 Inventions
  1. How does asking questions while reading help you understand the text better?
9.3 Inventions
  1. What is the difference between past and present verb tenses?
9.4 Inventions
  1. What do you look for when editing an essay?

Module Video Questions:

When a student watches a video take time to ask them questions about what they watched. Suggested questions for the videos in this module are listed here. Suggestion: Have the student watch the entire video first all the way through. Then have them watch the video a second time, as they watch it pause the video and ask the questions.

Module Suggested Read Aloud Books:

Take time to read to your student or have them read aloud to you. Read a different book each day. While reading the book point out concepts being taught. You may purchase these books or find them at your local library. Suggested things to discuss while reading the book:

  • What is the main idea?
  • What are three things new you learned?
  • How does this book relate to what you are learning about?
