Module Overview:

In this module, students will learn about the long a sound that silent e makes. They will practice their sight words (please, out, soon) and long a-words. They will also read the weekly story and record an oral retell. They will learn about the silent e. They will practice their spelling words (cane, mane, lane, bake, lake, make, rake, take) and their independent reading.

  • As your student reads “Bake a Cake” ask them the following question: What was used to bake a cake? Draw a picture of your favorite part of the story and write about it using your sight words.
  • During Independent Reading time have your Kindergartner read the story they chose out loud so that you can hear errors and correct them if needed.
2 31.2 Long a with Silent e
  • Use the sight word flashcards from this week daily with your student. Mix them up, show them the words and ask them to read the sight word. Next do not show them the word, but say the word and ask them to spell the word.
  • During Independent Reading time have your Kindergartner read the story they chose out loud so that you can hear errors and correct them if needed.

  • As your student practices writing sight words have them spell the words as they write each letter in the word and then read the word when they are done writing it.
  • During Independent Reading time have your Kindergartner read the story they chose out loud so that you can hear errors and correct them if needed.
  • Have your student practice spelling their spelling words, say a word and have them spell it.
4 31.4 Long a with Silent e
  • In this lesson, students will continue the writing process with a story map. Students brainstormed experiences in a previous lesson that will turn into a story topic today.
  • During Independent Reading time have your Kindergartner read the story they chose out loud so that you can hear errors and correct them if needed.
5 31.5 Long a with Silent e Don’t forget to have your student complete their independent reading log and assignment and submit it at the Independent Reading Assignment lesson dropbox. You may have to help them fill it out. Remember to submit their work for the week in the Module 31 Weekly Written Work Phonics Long a lesson dropbox.
