Module 3- Math 1 - Course Guide
Module Overview:
In this module, learners will explore numbers beyond 10 using place value concepts. They will practice creating and recognizing numbers with tens and ones using place value charts, ten frames, and place value blocks. Learners will count unit blocks and rods by tens and ones, group numbers by tens when counting over 19, and represent numbers in multiple ways. This module helps learners build a strong understanding of place value to support counting, number recognition, and number creation.

Learning Coach Notes:
| Lesson # | Lesson Title | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Place Value | Guide your learner in creating numbers using a place value chart by showing them how each digit represents tens or ones. Start with simple numbers (like 12 or 23) and place the correct number of tens and ones in the chart. Use physical manipulatives, such as blocks or counters, to make the tens and ones visible and hands-on. Encourage your learner to say the number aloud and explain how they placed each digit in the chart. Praise their effort and gently correct any mistakes to build confidence in understanding place value. |
| 2 | Ten Frame Counting | Help your learner use ten frames to count numbers greater than 10 by filling one ten frame completely first and then adding the extra ones to a second frame. Show them how each full ten frame represents ten, making it easier to see and count larger numbers. Encourage your learner to say the total number aloud as they combine the tens and ones. Use hands-on items like counters, buttons, or small toys to make the counting interactive and visual. Praise their effort and guide them gently if they need help keeping track of the tens and ones. |
| 3 | Tens and Ones | Support your learner in recognizing and writing numbers by focusing on tens and ones. Use place value blocks—rods for tens and unit blocks for ones—to help them visualize each number. Have your learner count the blocks aloud, first by tens and then by ones, and write the corresponding number. Encourage them to explain how they counted and how the tens and ones make up the whole number. Celebrate correct answers and gently guide them if they miscount or write the number incorrectly. |
| 4 | Recognize and Create Numbers | Help your learner recognize and create numbers using tens and ones by using place value blocks, rods, or counters. Show them how to group ones into tens when counting numbers over 19 to make counting easier. Encourage your learner to say the number aloud as they group and count, and to write the number using tens and ones. Provide hands-on practice and praise their effort, guiding them gently if they need help understanding the groups of ten. |
| 5 | Module 3 Wrap Up | Support your learner in recognizing and creating numbers using place value charts, ten frames, and place value blocks. Show how each tool represents tens and ones and how they relate to each other. Encourage your learner to build numbers with the blocks, place them correctly on a chart, and fill ten frames to match the number. Have them say the number aloud and explain their thinking as they represent it in different ways. Celebrate correct representations and gently guide them if they need help connecting tens and ones across the tools. |
Module Guiding Questions:
When a student starts a lesson ask them questions to check for prior knowledge and understanding and to review concepts being taught. At the end of the lesson ask the questions again to see if their answer changes.

Module Video Questions:
When a student watches a video take time to ask them questions about what they watched. Suggested questions for the videos in this module are listed here. Suggestion: Have the student watch the entire video first all the way through. Then have them watch the video a second time, as they watch it pause the video and ask the questions.

Module Suggested Read Aloud Books:
Take time to read to your student or have them read aloud to you. Read a different book each day. While reading the book point out concepts being taught. You may purchase these books or find them at your local library. Suggested things to discuss while reading the book:
- What is the main idea?
- What are three things new you learned?
- How does this book relate to what you are learning about?
