Module 19: Once Upon a Me!-Language Arts 2 - Course Guide

Module Overview:

In this module, learners develop reading, writing, and language skills while exploring nonfiction texts and autobiographies. Learners practice identifying the topic and main (central) ideas of nonfiction texts and recognizing the features of an autobiography. They expand vocabulary by using context clues and making real-life connections to new words, while also strengthening foundational word skills by identifying words with the vowel teams -igh and -ue and recognizing high-frequency words such as blue, night, and right. Learners build grammar skills by identifying and using present, past, and future tense in sentences. Throughout the module, learners move through the writing process to plan, draft, revise, edit, and publish an “All About Me” writing piece, while practicing reading grade-level text with fluency and proper formation of the cursive lowercase letters r and s.

Learning Coach Notes:

Lesson # Lesson Title Notes
1 19.1 Once Upon a Me! Students will learn two new spellings for the /long i/ and /long u/ sounds this week. You may want to write some words that have these spelling patterns on a chart or sticky notes that your learner can easily reference. This week’s Module Story and writing assignment are connected. Students will listen to an autobiography and then write their own. You can help your learner think about autobiographies by telling them your own life story.
2 19.2 Once Upon a Me! Students will continue to practice concepts introduced for the week. Ask your learner to think of more words that have the -igh and -ue spelling patterns in them and to point them out in books you read and on signs you see. Have your learner ask a family member to tell their autobiography to give your child more experience with autobiographies. Your learner will use the graphic organizer completed yesterday to write a rough draft of their autobiography.
3 19.3 Once Upon a Me! Students will continue to practice phonemic awareness and word work skills to build reading skills and will learn shades of meaning for their vocabulary words. To extend learning, ask your learner to think of other words that have similar meanings to their vocabulary words. Students will learn about first-person and third-person perspectives. After learning, use texts you have at home to have your learner identify first and third-person perspectives. Students will revise their rough draft to include how they feel about the memories they shared.
4 19.4 Once Upon a Me! Students will practice the skills learned this week. Students will use their understanding of vocabulary words to complete a cloze passage interactive activity. Encourage your learner to read the entire story first, before inserting words. Ask your learner why they think the word fits in the blank and to give a justification for their thinking. Prepare your learner to revise their autobiography using the information learned so far.
5 19.5 Once Upon a Me! Students will review the skills learned this week before they demonstrate their understanding. To review verb tenses, give your learner sentences in the present, past, and future tense and ask them to identify the tense of each sentence. You could also ask your learner to make up a few sentences using future tense verbs. Students will need to have a peer review their autobiography today. You may want to coordinate this with someone beforehand to create a simple transition to this part of the lesson. A friend, family member, or classmate can provide the peer review.

Module Guiding Questions:

When a student starts a lesson ask them questions to check for prior knowledge and understanding and to review concepts being taught. At the end of the lesson ask the questions again to see if their answer changes.

Module Suggested Read Aloud Books:

Take time to read to your student or have them read aloud to you. Read a different book each day. While reading the book point out concepts being taught. You may purchase these books or find them at your local library. Suggested things to discuss while reading the book:

  • What is the main idea?
  • What are three things new you learned?
  • How does this book relate to what you are learning about?

# Book Author Lexile Level
1 The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind William Kamkwamba
2 I Am Every Good Thing Derrick Barnes
3 Brown Girl Dreaming Jacqueline Woodson

Module Outing:

Take some time to apply what your student is learning to the real world. Suggested outings are below.

# Outing
1 Learners may visit a local library to explore autobiographies and biographies written for young readers. During the visit, learners examine nonfiction books, identify important life events in a person’s story, and observe text features that help organize information. This experience helps learners understand how real people share their life stories as they prepare to write their own autobiographical piece.
