Module 13: The Letter Rr- Language Arts K - Course Guide

Module Overview:

In this module, learners will explore the letter Rr by identifying its sound, forming it correctly, and using their knowledge of letter-sound relationships to decode words in the Decodable Book. They will also develop fluency and word recognition by practicing high-frequency words such as ran, play, and help. Learners will strengthen phonological awareness by identifying the number of syllables in words and blending letter sounds to read new ones. Vocabulary development continues through the review of familiar words and building background knowledge to support comprehension. In reading and writing, learners will be introduced to persuasive texts, identifying what the author wants the reader to think or do. They will express their own opinions through a persuasive drawing and explanation, applying both creative and language skills. By the end of the module, learners will confidently engage with a variety of texts and practice key literacy skills with increasing independence.

Learning Coach Notes:

Lesson # Lesson Title Notes
1 13.1 Letter Rr Students will learn the letter Rr this week. Pay close attention to mouth formation and tongue placement when helping your learner produce the correct phoneme. The colored paper squares will be used to show the phonemes in the new words of the week. After listening to the Module Story, help your learner make a connection by using items at home to dress up for the job he or she would like one day.
2 13.2 Letter Rr You will need materials for the first activity. Gather an empty bin or bowl, a bag of rice, and items that begin with the /r/ sound. These materials will help your learner create a sensory bin to use. If you would like to dye the rice to make it more fun, you can put one cup of rice in a zippered plastic bag with one teaspoon of vinegar and liquid food coloring. Shake the bag to evenly color the rice. You can make seven different colors of rice for the sensory bin.
3 13.3 Letter Rr Pay close attention to how your learner produces the /r/ sound. Discuss the mouth formation and tongue position to ensure correct pronunciation. Use the Make the Sound video to help with this. Encourage your learner to use a mirror to see his or her mouth when producing the sound. As your learner practices counting syllables, remind your child to place a hand under the chin to feel the drop. Each time the chin drops, count one syllable.
4 13.4 Letter Rr Allow your learner to complete the interactive practice activities as independently as possible. As your child thinks of a persuasive writing idea, provide prompts and guidance to help them choose a topic. Think back to things your learner has asked for recently and remind them of these ideas.
5 13.5 Letter Rr Your learner will show what they learned this week. Guide your child through this lesson but refrain from providing answers. Your learner’s teacher will use this lesson to understand how well your child is learning.
