Module 11: Weather & Climate-Science 2 - Course Guide

Module Overview:

In this module, students will learn to identify types of weather, collect and display data on weather conditions, and draw conclusions about patterns in data. Students will learn to assess different scenarios to determine the best choices for clothing, activity, or transportation. They will learn to define “climate”, make observations about the local climate, and compare and contrast climate and weather.

Learning Coach Notes:

Lesson # Lesson Title Notes
1 The Weather After completing this lesson ask your student to explain what they learned about weather patterns and how to use them to predict the weather.
2 Weather and You After completing this lesson, ask your student to start watching weather forecasts and use them to predict how those forecasts will affect how they go about their day.
3 Climate After completing this lesson, ask your student to explain the difference between climate and weather. If possible, pull out a map of the world and ask them to predict what type of climate different locations on the map may have based on where they are located on the world map.

Module Guiding Questions:

When a student starts a lesson ask them questions to check for prior knowledge and understanding and to review concepts being taught. At the end of the lesson ask the questions again to see if their answer changes.

Lesson Title Question
The Weather
  1. What is a weather pattern?
Weather and You
  1. How does the weather affect your life?
Climate
  1. What is the difference between climate and weather?

Module Video Questions:

When a student watches a video take time to ask them questions about what they watched. Suggested questions for the videos in this module are listed here. Suggestion: Have the student watch the entire video first all the way through. Then have them watch the video a second time, as they watch it pause the video and ask the questions.

Lesson Title Video Question
The Weather Weather with Sari
  1. What is a meteorologist?
  2. How did Sari predict a thunderstorm?
Climate New Home, New Climate
  1. How was Shanghai's climate different from Colorado's?

Module Suggested Read Aloud Books:

Take time to read to your student or have them read aloud to you. Read a different book each day. While reading the book point out concepts being taught. You may purchase these books or find them at your local library. Suggested things to discuss while reading the book:

  • What is the main idea?
  • What are three things new you learned?
  • How does this book relate to what you are learning about?

# Book Author Lexile Level

Module Outing:

Take some time to apply what your student is learning to the real world. Suggested outings are below.

# Outing
1 If possible, contact a local news station to see if your student can visit with a meteorologist to see what they do to predict the weather and create their weather reports.
