Module 8: Legend Has It...-Language Arts 2 - Course Guide

Module Overview:

In this module, learners will grow as readers and writers by exploring how stories are built and how language works. They will practice identifying words with soft g and soft c sounds, master high-frequency words such as does, goes, and your. In grammar, they will discover how to use reflexive pronouns to improve their sentences, while also practicing the formation of the letters v, w, and x. To strengthen their reading, learners will focus on the sequence of events, using evidence from the text to explain what happens first, next, and last. All of these skills come together as they write, revise, and edit their own original stories, moving through the writing process to create a final published narrative with a clear and logical order.

1	8.1 Legend Has It ...	Your child will learn the soft sounds for letters c and g this week. Students will learn the rule that when c or g is followed by i, e, or y, this usually makes the c or g make the soft sound. It can be helpful to write that on a piece of paper and post it in a visible place as a reminder. Your learner will also begin planning a narrative writing today using a graphic organizer. Encourage your learner to take time with the graphic organizer to think about an idea. The more details on the organizer, the easier it will be to begin writing the story!
2	8.2 Legend Has It ...	Students will continue practicing soft g and c words, word chaining, spelling words and WOW words, and fluency. You can expect this part of the lesson to take some time as your learner is still new to the rule for the soft c and g and to their spelling and WOW words. Remember to keep a note with the rule for the soft c and g visible in your child’s work space. Your learner will write the rough draft of their narrative today, so be sure to have the graphic organizer from yesterday within reach.
3	8.3 Legend Has It ...	Today, your learner will continue building upon the new skills introduced this week. When your child answers the comprehension questions about the Module Story, encourage them to look back in the story to develop their answers. Your learner will revise the narrative they wrote yesterday. Use the checklist as a guide to help your learner improve their writing, rather than focusing on editing.
4	8.4 Legend Has It ...	Students will continue practicing the new skills of the week using interactive activities. A cloze reading activity will aid your learner in identifying and recognizing the meaning of vocabulary words by determining which vocabulary word fits in each part of a story. As your learner edits their narrative, show them examples of correct punctuation and capitalization in a favorite book. This will provide a concrete example of why editing is important to create a story others can understand.
5	8.5 Legend Has It ...	Allow your learner to work independently with the interactive activities to demonstrate their learning from the week. Extend learning by asking your child to tell you words with the soft g or soft c sounds in them. A peer review of your learner’s narrative will need to be completed today. It can be helpful to schedule with this person a time for the review to be completed. The peer can be a friend or a family member.
