Module 10: Final Blends- Language Arts 1 - Course Guide

Module Overview:

In this module, learners will explore final blends like -nd, -st, and -mp. They’ll practice identifying and decoding these blends, and changing sounds to build new words. Learners will also use context clues to understand vocabulary, and learn about adjectives, conjunctions, and feeling words. In writing, learners will create different types of sentences and complete simple rhyming poems. They’ll connect ideas in texts and improve reading fluency by practicing with decodable books.

Learning Coach Notes:

Lesson # Lesson Title Notes
1 10.1 Final Blends Your learner will identify final blends this week, specifically -nd, -nt, -st, -lk, and -mp. Blends are two consonants that blend two sounds. You can still hear both individual phonemes in a blend. Blends are more difficult to hear at the end of a word than at the beginning. Monitor how well your learner can distinguish final blends in this lesson. If they are struggling with hearing the final blends, practice saying aloud words with end blends like cent and fast. Ask your learner to identify the ending blend. Practice saying the phonemes that make up a blend, like /s/ and /t/, and then blending those phonemes: /st/. Once your learner is easily identifying final blends, encourage them to generate their own list of words with final blends. Have your learner practice writing those words.
2 10.2 Final Blends Recognizing final blends is the first step to decoding words in this module. Monitor how well your learner can identify final blends in the first activity. If they need support with this activity, a quick review of consonants and vowels may be helpful, as well as reviewing with them how the mouth works differently to say vowels and consonants. If your learner is easily able to recognize and read the blends, encourage them to build words with a beginning blend and a final blend. You can use foam letters, magnetic letters, or other tangible letters to build words. A fun activity for practice is to use the cookie sheet and magnetic letters to build words with final blends. You can prompt your learner to make word chains or build new words by modifying the sounds. For example, build the word fast and change the beginning sound to /l/, creating the word last.
3 10.3 Final Blends Practice blending two syllables to make a word with your learner. Give them two syllables and then ask your learner to repeat them. Have your learner say the word the syllables blend to make. Point out conjunctions in sentences. Have your learner tell you when you should use and, or, and but. While reading with your learner, model making connections to ideas in the text. Encourage or prompt your learner to do the same.
4 10.4 Final Blends In this lesson, students will modify final blends in words to create new words. If your learner needs more support, you can break the process of modifying a sound to make a new word into smaller steps. For example, ask your learner to identify the final blend in the word first. Circle or highlight the final blend. Then, write the word without the final blend. Next, ask your learner to add a new sound to the word. Write in the new sound. Finally, ask your learner to identify the new word.
5 10.5 Final blends In this lesson, students will review skills learned in this module such as identifying and reading words with final blends. You can do word-building activities with your learner to practice reading and spelling words with final blends. Do this by giving your learner foam or magnetic letters or print and cut out letter cards. Make the sounds in a final blend word like tent. Have your learner move the letters for each sound in front of them. Practice blending the sounds and ask your learner to read the word aloud.

Module Guiding Questions:

When a student starts a lesson ask them questions to check for prior knowledge and understanding and to review concepts being taught. At the end of the lesson ask the questions again to see if their answer changes.

Lesson Title Question
10.1 Final Blends
  1. What are final blends?
10.2 Final Blends
  1. What are conjunctions?
10.3 Final Blends
  1. Can you identify rhyming words with final blends?
10.4 Final Blends
  1. How do you decode words with final blends?

Module Video Questions:

When a student watches a video take time to ask them questions about what they watched. Suggested questions for the videos in this module are listed here. Suggestion: Have the student watch the entire video first all the way through. Then have them watch the video a second time, as they watch it pause the video and ask the questions.

Module Suggested Read Aloud Books:

Take time to read to your student or have them read aloud to you. Read a different book each day. While reading the book point out concepts being taught. You may purchase these books or find them at your local library. Suggested things to discuss while reading the book:

  • What is the main idea?
  • What are three things new you learned?
  • How does this book relate to what you are learning about?
