Learning Coach Notes:

Lesson # Lesson Title Notes
1 27.1 R-controlled ar In this lesson, students will be introduced to a new sound, the r-controlled vowel /ar/. Students will practice listening for and identifying the /ar/ sound in words. You can extend this practice by saying words aloud to your learner and having them say if they hear the /ar/ sound in the word. Students will also practice identifying the ar grapheme in words. You can also write words on note cards and ask your learners to tell if they see the grapheme ar. Students will also be introduced to their module spelling words, Words of the Week, and vocabulary words. Review and practice these with your learner throughout the week by reading, writing, and using these words in everyday conversations.
2 27.2 R-controlled ar In today’s lesson, students will continue learning about the r-controlled vowel /ar/. Students will listen for the middle vowel sound in words. To continue practicing this skill, you can say one-syllable words aloud to your learner and ask them to identify the middle vowel sound. Use a mix of words that contain the middle /ar/ vowel sound along with other vowel sounds such as /a/, /long a/, or other r-controlled vowel sounds like /or/ or /er/. That can help your learner distinguish between the r-controlled /ar/ and other vowel sounds that are similar. Students will also learn how authors use words and phrases to express feelings and encourage readers to use their senses when comprehending text. A great way to practice this is by reading different texts with your learner and pointing out when such words or phrases are used.
3 27.3 R-controlled ar In this lesson, students will practice adding an end sound to a sound part or word to create a new word. You can continue practicing this with your learner by saying a sound part aloud such as /spla/ and asking your learner to add an end sound, like /t/. Ask them what the new word is, /splat/. Point out Words of the Week and vocabulary words as you read aloud with your learner this week.
4 27.4 R-controlled ar In this lesson, students will practice substituting end sounds in words to make new words. Continue practicing this skill with your learner by saying a word aloud and asking them to substitute the ending sound with a new one. For example, say the word chart and ask your learner to change the /t/ to /m/. Then, ask them to say the new word, charm. Students will also practice reading words with the r-controlled vowel ar. You can practice reading ar words with your learner. Write words on note cards or paper. Have your child use their decoding skills to read the words.
5 27.5 R-controlled ar Today’s lesson will be a review of skills learned in the module this week. Students will practice rhyming words with the /ar/ sound. You can practice this by giving your learner a word with the /ar/ sound like charge. Then, ask them to think of a word that rhymes, like large. Students will also practice reading decodable sentences with ar words. You can write additional decodable sentences on paper and have your learner read the sentence. Check their comprehension of the sentence by asking them to draw a picture to go with the sentence. You can also practice identifying descriptive language in books you are reading with your learner. Look for words or phrases that show feelings or appeal to the five senses. Discuss why and how these words or phrases are descriptive.

Module Guiding Questions:
