Module 1: Consonant Review- Language Arts 1 - Course Guide
Module Overview:
In this module, learners will build strong foundational reading skills by listening for beginning and ending sounds in words. They will learn to match those sounds—called phonemes—to the letters, or graphemes, that represent them, including letters like t, s, m, f, n, b, c, p, h, r, d, g, l, z, v, w, j, k, q, y, and x. Learners will also practice using clues in a sentence or story to figure out the meaning of new vocabulary words. They'll explore how books are organized, how to read and write from left to right, and what makes a complete sentence. By making predictions using pictures and text, learners will begin thinking like active readers. They’ll also work on writing clearly by checking that their words are spaced correctly.

Learning Coach Notes:
| Lesson # | Lesson Title | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1.1 Tt, Mm, Ff, Ss | As your learner practices the letter sounds, review the movement their mouth makes when saying each letter. Have your learner pay attention to the placement of their lips and tongue as they say each letter sound. Following the lesson, point out objects with your learner that begin with the letter sounds in this lesson, like table /t/ and flower /f/. |
| 2 | 1.2 Nn, Bb, Cc, Pp | In this lesson, your learner will be introduced to four more letters: Bb, Nn, Cc, and Pp. After the lesson, continue having your learner practice these letter sounds. Point out words that start with the same letter sounds, like box and catch. As your learner practices letter sounds, remind them of the movement their mouth makes when saying that phoneme. Encourage your learner to write the letters in materials like sand or shaving cream or forming the letters using playdough. As you read stories, ask your child to identify some of the different parts of a book found on the front and back covers and on the inside pages. |
| 3 | 1.3 Hh, Rr, Dd, Gg | After the lesson, encourage your learner to practice the H, R, D and G letter sounds. Point out words that start with these letter sounds, like hat and dog. As your learner practices letter sounds, remind them of the movement their mouth makes when saying that phoneme. To continue building students’ phonemic awareness skills, have your learner orally practice segmenting single-syllable words into their sound parts. For example, the word hen can be segmented as /h/ /e/ /n/. While reading aloud, pause frequently and have your child make predictions based on the text and images they see in the story. At the end of the read aloud, discuss whether their predictions were correct. |
| 4 | 1.4 Ll, Zz, Ww, Vv | As your learner practices the new letter sounds, remind them to observe the movement of their mouths. Following the lesson, point out objects that begin with the letter sounds in this lesson, like lamp /l/ and vase /v/. Invite your learner to join in. When reading books with your learner, ask them questions to prompt them to make predictions about the plot and characters. Some examples are given below. Before reading: What do you think this story will be about? While reading: What do you think will happen next? What will the character do? After reading: Which of your predictions were correct? |
| 5 | 1.5 Jj, Kk, Qq, Yy, Xx | In this lesson, learners will practice phonics and handwriting skills. Your learner will practice recognizing and isolating the consonants Jj, Kk, Qq, Yy, and Xx and their corresponding sounds as the initial and end letter and sound in words. Your learner will also independently practice reading the Words of the Week. Review the meaning of the Words of the Week. Check your learner's use of these words in sentences for understanding. Reread the vocabulary story "Autumn Feast" for additional review of vocabulary words. As you read the story, point out context clues and how they help a reader define new words. |
Module Guiding Questions:
When a student starts a lesson ask them questions to check for prior knowledge and understanding and to review concepts being taught. At the end of the lesson ask the questions again to see if their answer changes.
| Lesson Title | Question |

Module Video Questions:
When a student watches a video take time to ask them questions about what they watched. Suggested questions for the videos in this module are listed here. Suggestion: Have the student watch the entire video first all the way through. Then have them watch the video a second time, as they watch it pause the video and ask the questions.

Module Suggested Read Aloud Books:
Take time to read to your student or have them read aloud to you. Read a different book each day. While reading the book point out concepts being taught. You may purchase these books or find them at your local library. Suggested things to discuss while reading the book:
- What is the main idea?
- What are three things new you learned?
- How does this book relate to what you are learning about?
