Module 18: Energy for Plants and Animals- Science 3 - Course Guide

Module Overview:

In this module, students will learn to illustrate various food chains, infer patterns in food chains, illustrate a food web based on a particular ecosystem, explain how a food web differs from a food chain, analyze a food web to make predictions about what would happen if one organism were removed, create a food web that includes bees, and analyze what would happen if bees were removed from the ecosystem completely.

Learning Coach Notes:

Lesson # Lesson Title Notes
1 Follow the Energy Flow After completing this lesson, ask your student to explain what a food chain is and the parts of a food chain.
2 Food Webs After completing this lesson, ask your student to explain a food web and how it is important to an ecosystem. Have them investigate further by looking up one of their favorite animals and seeing if they can identify a food web that would involve their animal.
3 Analyzing a Food Web After completing this lesson, ask your student to explain what happens when parts of a food chain are removed. For further study, you can have them complete an internet search on the wolves of Yellowstone to learn more about the impact on an ecosystem when a part of a food web or food chain is removed.
4 Project: Bye-Bye Bees Before your student begins their project have them review the directions and make sure they understand what they are supposed to do. When they are done have them double-check the directions to make sure they completed all required tasks.

Module Guiding Questions:

When a student starts a lesson ask them questions to check for prior knowledge and understanding and to review concepts being taught. At the end of the lesson ask the questions again to see if their answer changes.

Lesson Title Question
Follow the Energy Flow
  1. How does energy move through living things?
Food Webs
  1. How are food webs important to an ecosystem?
Analyzing a Food Web
  1. What happens if an animal is removed from a food web?
Project: Bye-Bye Bees
  1. What if there were no bees?

Module Video Questions:

When a student watches a video take time to ask them questions about what they watched. Suggested questions for the videos in this module are listed here. Suggestion: Have the student watch the entire video first all the way through. Then have them watch the video a second time, as they watch it pause the video and ask the questions.

Module Suggested Read Aloud Books:

Take time to read to your student or have them read aloud to you. Read a different book each day. While reading the book point out concepts being taught. You may purchase these books or find them at your local library. Suggested things to discuss while reading the book:

  • What is the main idea?
  • What are three things new you learned?
  • How does this book relate to what you are learning about?

# Book Author Lexile Level
1 The Magic School Bus: Gets Eaten: A Book About Food Chains Joanna Cole and Carolyn Bracken
2 What Are Food Chains and Webs? Bobbie Kalman
3 Who Eats What?: Food Chains and Food Webs Patricia Lauber and Holly Keller

Module Outing:

Take some time to apply what your student is learning to the real world. Suggested outings are below.
