Module 6: Twisty Tales-Language Arts 2 - Course Guide

Module Overview:

This module integrates foundational literacy skills with narrative writing and visual analysis. Learners begin by reviewing previously taught syllable types, phonics patterns, and high-frequency words from Modules 1–5, while also practicing the correct formation of the letters p, q, and r. They develop vocabulary and reference skills by listing words in alphabetical order, using a digital dictionary, and applying context clues or shades of meaning to determine word choice. In grammar, learners identify, classify, and use pronouns, eventually revising sentences to incorporate them correctly. Reading comprehension focuses on how illustrations support characters, setting, and plot, requiring learners to recall details and cite specific evidence from the images. Finally, learners apply these skills to construct and publish a narrative text that utilizes temporal words to establish a clear sequence of events while maintaining grade-level reading fluency.

Learning Coach Notes:

Lesson # Lesson Title Notes
1 6.1 Twisty Tales Students are reviewing this week. Today, they will review closed syllable words with blends and short vowel sounds, such as flag, chest, and pond, where a consonant closes the vowel to keep it short. To practice, say a word like trap or swim and have your child tap or finger stretch the sounds. Ask them to find blends like tr in trap or sw in swim. Students are also learning about pronouns, both singular (he, she, it) and plural (they, we, them), and how they replace nouns in sentences. At home, you can support your learner with a simple game: take turns saying a sentence, and have your child identify the pronoun or make a new one using a different pronoun. This week, students will also begin writing a twisty tale, a short creative story that uses temporal words like first, next, and finally to show the order of events. Point out these words in stories you read together and talk about how they signal sequence.
2 6.2 Twisty Tales In today’s lesson, students are learning that the letter s can make more than one sound. Sometimes, it sounds like /s/, as in cats, and other times it sounds like /z/, as in dogs. To practice, write some words with an s and have your learner read the word aloud and say what sound the s is making, /s/ or /z/. Students are also reviewing WOW words and vocabulary words. Have your learner practice reading the WOW words throughout the week. Review the meanings of vocabulary words or practice using them in sentences with your learner. During reading, students will focus on how illustrations give clues about the characters, setting, and plot. While reading aloud with your learner, stop and observe the pictures together. Have your learner tell what story clues the pictures give them.
3 6.3 Twisty Tales This week, students are reviewing important skills they’ve learned so far this semester. In this lesson, they will review digraphs, which are two letters that make one sound, like sh, ch, or th. You can support your learner by saying a word with a digraph aloud and asking your learner to identify the digraph sound. In this lesson, students will practice comparing vocabulary words that have similar meanings. You can practice this skill with your learner by saying a word such as happy and asking your learner to think of a word with a similar meaning like joyful. Students will also review pronouns, which are words like he, she, or they that take the place of nouns. Point out pronouns when reading aloud with your learner. Talk about what noun the pronoun is replacing and if it is singular or plural.
4 6.4 Twisty Tales This week, students are reviewing important foundational skills in reading and writing. They are practicing VCe (vowel-consonant-e) words in which the vowels are long vowel sounds. They are also reviewing WOW words they have learned in previous modules. They are also focusing on pronouns, both singular and plural. To help support this skill, give your learner a pronoun and ask them to craft a sentence using the pronoun. To support comprehension skills, students are learning how to use illustrations in stories to better understand the plot, characters, and setting. As you read with your learner this week, discuss the pictures in the books to explore what they tell about the story.
5 6.5 Twisty Tales In this lesson, students continue to review skills and concepts they have learned in the past few modules. Today, students will review the FLOSS(Z) spelling rule, when you double the final consonant f, l, s, or z in one-syllable words with short vowels. Practice spelling these words with your learner. Say a word like spill, jazz, or bass. Ask them to describe the vowel sound and tell which consonant should be doubled. Students will also practice analyzing illustrations to deepen comprehension and storytelling. To support your learner at home, ask them questions about the characters, setting, or plot based on the pictures in books. Ask your learner to provide evidence from the pictures to support their answer.

Module Guiding Questions:

When a student starts a lesson ask them questions to check for prior knowledge and understanding and to review concepts being taught. At the end of the lesson ask the questions again to see if their answer changes.
