Module 27-Act it Out-Language Arts 2 - Course Guide
Module Overview:
In this module, learners strengthen foundational reading and writing skills while exploring how characters grow and change in narrative texts. They practice identifying and classifying open and closed two-syllable words and build automaticity with high-frequency words to support fluent reading of grade-level text. Learners use context clues and reference materials such as dictionaries, thesauruses, and online tools to determine and refine the meanings of new vocabulary words. They also develop their understanding of language by applying conjunctions and prepositions to improve sentence structure. Throughout the module, learners engage in the full writing process by planning, drafting, revising, and publishing a narrative that includes two characters who change over time. In addition, they build handwriting skills through practice with cursive uppercase letters U and Y.

| 1 | 27.1 Act It Out | Students will focus on open and closed syllables today. Using the visual of a door can help! If possible, position the learning near a door. You could also print a picture of a door and cut the image along the door’s frame so that it can be opened and closed. Your learner will also review features of a drama using reference materials such as a dictionary, thesaurus, and online tools. If possible, have a dictionary and a thesaurus readily available for your student to explore. |
| 2 | 27.2 Act It Out | Students will continue practicing the skills introduced yesterday. To provide support for word chaining with syllables, you can tell your learner if the first or second syllable is being replaced. Use the door visual to help your child complete The Bucket Game to identify open and closed syllables in words. After your learner completes the vocabulary page, you can extend their learning by posing questions to help them gain a deeper understanding. Questions might include “When have you been uncomfortable? Which is worse to hold, a spider or a snake? Do you shiver when you go outside in the winter?” You and your learner can work together to explore some reference materials online. You might even want to take a trip to the public library or use your library login to access the database. |
| 3 | 27.3 Act It Out | Students will continue to practice the skills learned this week by applying their knowledge. The activities presented will help students deepen their understanding of concepts. Continue to remind students of the spelling patterns with open and closed syllables. Closed syllables have short vowels and open syllables have long vowels. If you do not have a dictionary at home, visit the library to complete the comprehension page of this lesson so your student has a physical dictionary to use to look up words. |
| 4 | 27.4 Act It Out | If your learner needs support when word chaining, provide small objects to represent each syllable. Have your learner remove the syllable that is being replaced and add in another object to show the changed syllable. Have a dictionary and a thesaurus ready for your student to use during this lesson. |
| 5 | 27.5 Act It Out | Students will continue to work with open and closed syllables and review long and short vowels. Students will show their understanding of prepositions and conjunctions by correcting a paragraph. If your learner struggles to find all the errors, point out an error and ask your learner how they would correct it. If additional help is needed, provide them with three possible answers to choose from. |
Module Guiding Questions:
When a student starts a lesson ask them questions to check for prior knowledge and understanding and to review concepts being taught. At the end of the lesson ask the questions again to see if their answer changes.

Take time to read to your student or have them read aloud to you. Read a different book each day. While reading the book point out concepts being taught. You may purchase these books or find them at your local library. Suggested things to discuss while reading the book:
- What is the main idea?
- What are three things new you learned?
- How does this book relate to what you are learning about?
