Module 7: The Letter Ii- Language Arts K - Course Guide
Module Overview:
In this module, learners will explore the letter Ii, practicing correct formation and producing the short /i/ sound using proper mouth formation. They will decode and recognize high-frequency words such as "it," "in," and "into", and apply letter-sound knowledge to fluently read a decodable book. Learners will differentiate beginning and middle sounds in words and use finger stretching and ear spelling to construct and decode new words in writing. Through picture illustrations and sentence construction, they will connect their ideas to text. In addition, learners will identify the author, illustrator, and author’s purpose, as well as determine the meaning of new vocabulary to support comprehension and early literacy development.

Learning Coach Notes:
| Lesson # | Lesson Title | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 7.1 Letter Ii | As students learn a new letter this week, remind your learner that the letter Ii is a vowel. Call the sound “the short vowel sound” to help prepare your child for later in the year when they will learn the long vowel sound. Provide additional practice with this letter by having your learner write it in the air throughout the day. Encourage your child to engage with the Module Story by asking about the characters, setting, problem, and solution. |
| 2 | 7.2 Letter Ii | Reinforce your learner’s skills by giving them a CVC word and asking them to identify the middle sound. As you read aloud, ask your learner to identify the letter Ii on a page. Discuss the jobs of the author and illustrator. Show your learner different text types and discuss the author’s purpose. Reinforce the child’s understanding that ear spelling is writing the sounds in words, not writing the words with the correct spelling. |
| 3 | 7.3 Letter Ii | Continue to reinforce your learner’s skills by pointing out the letter Ii in stories or recipes throughout the day. Ask your child to make the short i sound. Provide two words and ask your learner which word begins with the short i sound. Help them identify the middle sound in words by saying a CVC word and asking your learner what the middle sound is. Continue practicing skills your child has already learned such as rhyming and alliteration. |
| 4 | 7.4 Letter Ii | Continue helping your learner practice the short i sound and identify the middle sound by providing words your child can evaluate. Use words like itch, ink, in, itself, pin, sit, nip, and miss. As your learner practices being an author and illustrator, allow them plenty of time to illustrate the picture and write the sentence. Provide a break between the drawing and writing portion of the assignment if needed. |
| 5 | 7.5 Letter Ii | Today, your learner will show their understanding of the skills they learned this week. This lesson will demonstrate for you your child’s level of understanding. Note areas of difficulty to continue to review with them. Please allow your learner to complete the activities independently. |
