Module 17: Customary and Metric Lengths - Course Guide
Module Overview:
In this module, students will explain estimation of length with and without appropriate tools in non-standard units, measure the length of objects using inches, feet, and yards, and measure the length of objects using centimeters and meters. They will understand that a metric unit is always the same length and compare centimeters and meters.

---|---|---|
1 | Non-Standard Units of Measurement | In their Math notebook, have your student explain what a non-standard unit of measurement is and list examples of non-standard units of measurement. \Ask your student to collect 3 items to measure from around the house and choose 2 different non-standard units of measurement to measure the items with. Have them measure their items with each non-standard unit of measurement they chose. What did they notice about their measurements? |
2 | Inches, Feet, and Yards |
|
3 | Centimeters and Meters | In their Math Notebook, have your student explain the metric system and the measurement units in the metric system. |
4 | Relate Inches, Feet, and Yards | Ask your student to explain the difference between standard and non-standard units of measurement. |
5 | Relate Centimeters and Meters | Ask your student to explain when to use centimeters or meters to measure an object. |
Module Guiding Questions:
When a student starts a lesson ask them questions to check for prior knowledge and understanding and to review concepts being taught. At the end of the lesson ask the questions again to see if their answer changes.
