Module 9: R Blends- Language Arts 1 - Course Guide

Module Overview:

In this module, learners will focus on recognizing and reading r blends—words that begin with blends like br, cr, and dr. They will practice blending sounds and syllables to build and decode r-blend words and explore rhyming words that contain these blends. Learners will develop vocabulary skills by using context clues to understand new words and will identify adjectives to describe nouns in sentences. They will also practice recalling the main idea and key details from both stories and informational texts. As learners read, they will interpret the beginning, middle, and end of stories and demonstrate comprehension by drawing or retelling these parts. They will also learn to modify r-blend words to create new words by changing or deleting sounds. By the end of the module, learners will confidently read r-blend words, understand story structure, use descriptive language, and read decodable texts fluently.

Learning Coach Notes:

Lesson # Lesson Title Notes
1 9.1 R Blends In this lesson, students will practice identifying the r-blends in words. Following the lesson, you can have your learner practice writing words with r-blends, like frog, crumb, drop, crib, drip, and free. You can play a sorting game with your learner by having them cut out their r-blend words. Then, ask your learner to sort the words by r-blends. For example, group the words with fr, dr, and cr together. Continue to practice defining these vocabulary words: lively, surround, trust, whirl, and creak. Read a story and have your learner recall details from the beginning, middle, and end.
2 9.2 R Blends To help your learner practice r-blends, read two-syllable words that contain r-blends, like gravel. Ask your learner to repeat the word and identify the r-blend, /gr/. Practice identifying the middle phoneme or vowel sound in simple r-blend words by having your learner say the sound they hear in the middle of a word like frog or trip. You can practice adjectives with your learner by having them objects. Explain that adjectives are words that describe or tell more about things, such as soft pillow or red dress. Finally, as you read the Decodable Book together, encourage your learner to use their knowledge of letter-sound relationships to decode unfamiliar words.
3 9.3 R Blends In this lesson, students will practice identifying, segmenting, and reading r-blend words. Following the lesson, you can have your learner practice segmenting r-blend words with three or four phonemes by clapping or tapping out the sounds. You can write the Words of the Week (an, him, round, not, go) on the sidewalk and have your learner jump to the correct word as you read it aloud. Your learner can continue to practice vocabulary words and identifying adjectives in stories. You can also read nonfiction texts to your learner and help them identify the main topic and key details of each text.
4 9.4 R Blends In this lesson, students will focus on recognizing r-blend in words. After the lesson, encourage your learner to write r-blend words like brag, crash, grip, truck, and print. Play a memory game by writing r-blend words on notecards and having your learner group words with the same r-blends together. Additionally, practice vocabulary words, by using them in everyday conversation. Encourage your learner to use the words in sentences. To build comprehension, read a story with your learner and ask them to draw a picture or write a sentence about the beginning, middle, and end of the story.
5 9.5 R Blends In this lesson your learner will practice modifying r-blend words. They will delete the beginning r blends in words and replace them to make new words. After this lesson, you can encourage your learner to try changing words like brick to lick or drop to pop. If your learner needs extra support, you can cross off the r blend and write the known ending of the new word. This will help them focus on the modification of the word. Encourage your learner to read simple sentences with r-blend words and then ask questions to monitor their understanding. You can practice vocabulary words like lively, surround, trust, whirl, and creak, and Heart Words like round and go. Finally, help your learner read the Decodable Book independently, offering praise and support to ensure your learner’s enthusiasm for reading and their confidence in reading continues to be positive.

1 R-Blend Scavenger Hunt: Pick a place to go where your student can find words that have r-blends, for example, a nature trail (frogs), a grocery store (grapes, pretzels, truffles, etc.), have them write what they find in their Language Arts notebook. Another option is to go to a greenhouse and look at all of the plants to identify the ones with r-blends and talk about how things grow.
