Module 21: Matter-Science 1B - Course Guide

Module Overview:

In this module, students will describe the properties of matter using their five senses. They will sort descriptions by their senses and describe everyday items by sight, smell, sound, touch, taste. Students will define matter and identify the three states, using models to describe the placement of the particles that form the model and observe how different materials react to changes in temperature.

Module Guiding Questions:

When a student starts a lesson ask them questions to check for prior knowledge and understanding and to review concepts being taught. At the end of the lesson ask the questions again to see if their answer changes.

Lesson Title Question
Matter and Our Senses
  1. What is matter?
States of Matter
  1. What are the states of matter?

Module Video Questions:

When a student watches a video take time to ask them questions about what they watched. Suggested questions for the videos in this module are listed here. Suggestion: Have the student watch the entire video first all the way through. Then have them watch the video a second time, as they watch it pause the video and ask the questions.

Lesson Title Video Question

  1. What senses can Oliver use to describe his ride down the slide?
  2. What senses does Rosie use to describe the leaves and the grass?
  3. When senses do Maddie use to describe a banana?
  4. What senses can Enrique use to describe the water from the fountain?
States of Matter Changes in Matter
  1. What happens to solid ice that is heated?
  2. What happens to liquid water when heat is added?
  3. What happens when you cool the objects down again?
  4. Why do vinegar and baking soda cause the balloon to inflate?

Module Suggested Read Aloud Books:

Take time to read to your student or have them read aloud to you. Read a different book each day. While reading the book point out concepts being taught. You may purchase these books or find them at your local library. Suggested things to discuss while reading the book:

  • What is the main idea?
  • What are three things new you learned?
  • How does this book relate to what you are learning about?

# Book Author Lexile Level
1 What Is the World Made Of? All About Solids, Liquids, and Gases Kathleen Weidner Zoehfeld
2 Many Kinds of Matter Jennifer Boothroyd
3 What's the Matter in Mr. Whisker's Room? Michael Elsohn Ross

Module Outing:

Take some time to apply what your student is learning to the real world. Suggested outings are below.

# Outing
1 Take a walk to your local playground and have some fun! Think about what senses can you use to describe the equipment and environment. Notice all the states of matter can you observe.
