Module 18: The Letter Zz- Language Arts K - Course Guide
Module Overview:
In this module, students will explore the letter Zz, identifying its sound and practicing correct letter formation. They will apply phonics skills to decode words in the Decodable Book and expand their understanding of review vocabulary and high-frequency words learned in previous modules. Phonemic awareness will be strengthened as students create short e word family words and rhymes, supporting both reading and spelling development. Students will also learn to use illustrations and context clues to make predictions about a text, boosting their comprehension and inferencing skills. To support writing growth, students will practice proofreading and constructing a final written copy, applying conventions of writing with care. This module reinforces foundational reading and writing skills while encouraging students to engage thoughtfully with texts.

Learning Coach Notes:
| Lesson # | Lesson Title | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 18.1 Letter Zz | As students learn a new phoneme, spend extra time practicing the production of the sound with your learner to ensure proper pronunciation. Provide guidance and support during the interactive activities so that your child can successfully learn this new phoneme. To extend the learning, encourage your learner to think of words that begin with the /z/ phoneme throughout the day. |
| 2 | 18.2 Letter Zz | Learners will continue practicing their learning with their new letter Zz. If your learner needs support to practice rhyming with the interactive activity, say each pair of words so that your child can hear them together. Your learner will make predictions using context and illustrations. Reinforce this concept before reading aloud to your child by asking questions based on the illustrations. The writing project your learner begins today will continue later in the week. Be sure to keep the worksheet in a safe place. |
| 3 | 18.3 Letter Zz | Learners will use the skills learned so far to complete the interactive activities of the lesson. Provide support to your learner to avoid frustration, but do not provide the answers. You may want to provide additional support with the more difficult skills, such as ear spelling and comprehension questions. |
| 4 | 18.4 Letter Zz | Use the activity in the introduction as a guide for an interactive way to help your learner make a connection with the new letter of the week. If you do not have toy animals at home, you may have animal crackers. Encourage your child to engage in imaginary play with their homemade zoo! Earlier in the week, your learner drew an illustration for a story or event. Today, they will write the beginning, middle, and ending of the story. If necessary, provide breaks between each sentence to avoid frustration. Provide praise and encouragement as your learner ear spells independently. |
| 5 | 18.5 Letter Zz | Today, your learner will show what they learned this week. Your child will proofread the story they wrote earlier this week and write the final copy before submitting it. Guide your learner through this lesson, but refrain from providing answers. Your child’s teacher will use this lesson to understand how well your child is learning. |
