ELA 2 Module 3: Bedtime - Course Guide
Module Overview:
In this module, learners build foundational reading and writing skills by practicing digraphs, high-frequency words, and letter formation. Learners explore the four types of sentences and develop vocabulary while learning to recognize and retell story plot and structure. Learners also plan, write, and edit a narrative using a graphic organizer and elements of plot.

Learning Coach Notes:
| Lesson # | Lesson Title | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 3.1 Bedtime | In this module, students will identify and read words with digraphs in them. Spelling words and WOW words this week will also have digraphs. Encourage your learner to read their spelling words and WOW words to practice using the digraphs. To continue practicing digraphs, have your child write spelling words, WOW words, and other lesson words with digraphs on note cards. Then, they can practice sorting the words by the digraph in each word. Your learner will also begin the writing process by brainstorming an idea for a story using story structure. Keep the graphic organizer in a safe place to use tomorrow. |
| 2 | 3.2 Short i | Help learners build CVC words with the middle /i/ sound by saying sounds slowly (e.g., /p/ - /i/ - /g/) and blending them to form words like pig. Use pictures or objects to make it fun. Practice syllables by clapping or tapping the beats in words like window or rabbit and counting how many syllables they hear. When reading stories, ask learners where and when the story happens to help them identify the setting. Encourage them to describe or draw the setting. Regular practice with these activities will boost phonics and comprehension skills. |
| 3 | 3.3 Bedtime | Students will continue practicing the skills they are learning this week, as well as learning new skills and concepts! As your learner discovers words with similar meanings, encourage them to act out the words to solidify their understanding. Folktales will be used to help practice story structure. Explore some familiar folktales and ask your learner to retell the stories to you, including the characters, setting, events, problem, solution, and moral. |
| 4 | 3.4 Bedtime | Students will continue practicing the new skills they are learning this week. Word chaining is a helpful activity to strengthen your learner’s reading skills. You can practice while driving in the car or waiting in line. To continue learning about story structure, students will learn about fables today. As an extension, you can revisit familiar fables and have your learner identify the characters, setting, events, problem, solution, and lesson. |
| 5 | 3.5 Bedtime | In this lesson, students will show what they have learned. After practicing spelling words and WOW words, have your learner take the spelling test, which can be found in the Module 3 folder. Your learner will review a rubric and learn how to complete a peer review before publishing their story. If an older sibling at home or a friend in the neighborhood is available, schedule time today to have that child complete the peer review. |
Module Guiding Questions:
When a student starts a lesson ask them questions to check for prior knowledge and understanding and to review concepts being taught. At the end of the lesson ask the questions again to see if their answer changes.

- What is the main idea?
- What are three things new you learned?
- How does this book relate to what you are learning about?
