Module 12: The Letter Hh-Language Arts K - Course Guide
Module Overview:
In this module, learners will focus on the letter Hh, practicing how to recognize its sound, form it correctly, and use it to decode words in their Decodable Book. They will continue to build phonemic awareness by segmenting words and identifying rhyming words, which supports reading and spelling development. Learners will also review high-frequency words introduced in Modules 7–11 and apply their understanding of vocabulary and text structure by identifying common types of texts. To extend comprehension, they will illustrate a book cover and write a sentence describing the type of text it represents. Through fluency practice, vocabulary development, and creative expression, learners will strengthen their ability to read, write, and talk about texts with growing independence.

Learning Coach Notes:
| Lesson # | Lesson Title | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 12.1 Letter Hh | The new letter this week is the letter Hh. As your learner produces this sound, be sure they do not add a sound using their vocal cords. The /h/ sound is made with breath only. Students will also learn words that begin with the /h/ sound. Encourage your learner to identify items around your home that begin with /h/. |
| 2 | 12.2 Letter Hh | Encourage your learner to practice saying the /h/ phoneme without adding any sounds to the end. It is common for speakers to add the /uh/ sound to this phoneme, but that is incorrect. When students practice the correct phoneme sounds, it is easier for them to blend sounds into words. This helps students read. For extra help, remind your learner to put a hand in front of their mouth to feel a small puff of air with the sound. Your learner will not feel a vibration in the throat. Use the four vocabulary words throughout the day to reinforce the meanings. |
| 3 | 12.3 Letter Hh | As your learner continues to practice the /h/ phoneme, provide guidance to ensure correct pronunciation. Encourage your learner to read the words independently in the Balloon Pop Game. Allow time to practice Heart Words so that your learner develops a deeper understanding of each word. Use the new vocabulary words throughout the day to reinforce their meaning. |
| 4 | 12.4 Letter Hh | Your learner will begin the lesson by creating houses out of popsicle sticks or other materials. You can use anything you have on hand that provides straight lines. Encourage your learner to make the /h/ sound correctly each time they build a part of the house. Use the Words of the Week Book to help your learner continue practicing the Heart Words and Flash Words learned so far this year. Use the My Sounds Book to review the consonant and vowel phonemes learned so far. |
| 5 | 12.5 Letter Hh | Your learner will show what they learned this week. Encourage them to use the review videos to confirm their learning. The interactive activities provide the opportunity for your child to use what they have learned. Guide your learner through this lesson but refrain from providing answers. Your child’s teacher will use this lesson to identify your learner’s strengths and areas of growth. |
