Module 15: Animals Without Backbones- Science 3 - Course Guide

Module Overview:

In this module, students will learn to identify and describe characteristics that help undersea invertebrates, mollusks, worms, and arthropods survive. They will compare and contrast variations in undersea invertebrates, mollusks, worms, and arthropods. Students will classify animals by specific characteristics and cite evidence to show survival advantages for various species.

Learning Coach Notes:

Lesson # Lesson Title Notes
1 Sea Creatures After completing this lesson, ask your student to look up information on their favorite sea creatures and describe what makes the animal a sea creature that is an invertebrate and what characteristics that sea creature has to help them survive.
2 Mollusks and Worms After completing this lesson, ask your student to look up information on their favorite mollusk and worm and describe what makes the animal a mollusk or worm and what characteristics that mollusk or worm has to help them survive.
3 Arthropods After completing this lesson, ask your student to look up information on their favorite arthropod and describe what makes the animal an arthropod and what characteristics that arthropod has to help them survive.
4 Project: Organizing Animals After your student reviews the directions for this project, ask them to explain the requirements of the project and the rubric before they begin. When they are finished have them review the requirements and rubric again, to make sure their project meets all of the requirements.

Module Guiding Questions:

When a student starts a lesson ask them questions to check for prior knowledge and understanding and to review concepts being taught. At the end of the lesson ask the questions again to see if their answer changes.

Lesson Title Question
Sea Creatures
  1. What characteristics help sea creatures survive?
Mollusks and Worms
  1. What characteristics help mollusks and worms survive?
Arthropods
  1. What characteristics help arthropods survive?
Project: Organizing Animals
  1. How do scientists learn about and organize living things?

Module Video Questions:

When a student watches a video take time to ask them questions about what they watched. Suggested questions for the videos in this module are listed here. Suggestion: Have the student watch the entire video first all the way through. Then have them watch the video a second time, as they watch it pause the video and ask the questions.
