Learning Coach Notes:

Lesson # Lesson Title Notes
1 34.1- Compound Words
  • In this lesson, your student will need to have a complete research paragraph written, revised, and edited. Your student will need to ask someone to complete a rubric for this paragraph.
  • As your student reads “Bullfrog Goes Downstream” ask them the following questions: What did the Bullfrog find when she went downstream all by herself? In their Language Arts notebook have your student draw a picture of their favorite part of the story and write about it using their spelling and sight words.
  • Use the sight word flashcards daily with your student. Mix them up, show them the words and ask them to read the sight word. Next do not show them the word but say the word and ask them to spell the word.
  • During Independent Reading time have your First Grader read the story they chose out loud so that you can hear errors and correct them if needed.
2 34.2- Compound Words
  • There will be no formal handwriting worksheets assigned during this semester. However, if you believe your student still needs more work or practice with handwriting, please visit the Teacher Guide for handwriting resources to implement on your own.
  • Have your student follow the directions below for the offline sight word activity in this lesson: 1. Write each sight word on a white piece of paper with a white crayon. 2. Next, use the water colors to paint over the sight words that were written with the white crayon.
  • The sight words will “magically” appear. Ask your student to read each sight word as it appears. Have him/her practice reading each sight word several times for practice.
3 34.3- Compound Words
  • Your student will be going on a word hunt for the phonics lesson today. Have your student search for compound words in a magazine or newspaper, and highlight those words when s/he finds one.
  • Your student’s spelling words are all compounds words. Have your student follow the directions below to practice the spelling words for this lessons. 1. Write each spelling word on separate index cards. 2. Cut the words in the middle, separating the two words. 3. Mix up the cards. 4. Put them back together to create the spelling words. 5. Play this several times.
  • When reading "Bullfrog Goes Downstream" in this lesson have your student write the compound words that are in the story in their Language Arts notebook.
  • During Independent Reading time have your First Grader read the story they chose out loud so that you can hear errors and correct them if needed.
4 34.4- Compound Words
  • Your student will need to have an entire research paragraph written, revised, and edited. S/he will need a final copy written for today’s writing lesson.
  • During Independent Reading time have your First Grader read the story they chose out loud so that you can hear errors and correct them if needed.
  • In their Language Arts notebook have your student write what happened in the Beginning, the Middle and the End of "Bullfrog Goes Downstream".
