Module 25: Thermometer and Other Tools-Science 1B - Course Guide

Module Overview:

In this module, students will learn about the concept of heat by learning about temperature. They will learn about how thermometers measure temperature and how to read them, as well as have some practice reading thermometers correctly. Students will learn about scientific tools used to observe and measure data, make connections between inventors and scientists, and practice identifying specific common scientific tools.

Module Guiding Questions:

When a student starts a lesson ask them questions to check for prior knowledge and understanding and to review concepts being taught. At the end of the lesson ask the questions again to see if their answer changes.

Lesson Title Question
Reading a Thermometer
  1. What is a temperature?
Scientific Tools and Inventions
  1. What tools do scientists use?

Module Video Questions:

When a student watches a video take time to ask them questions about what they watched. Suggested questions for the videos in this module are listed here. Suggestion: Have the student watch the entire video first all the way through. Then have them watch the video a second time, as they watch it pause the video and ask the questions.

Lesson Title Video Question
Reading a Thermometer Temperature
  1. What does Jay say the temperature is at the North Pole?
  2. Does Jay think the temperature is hot or cold?
  3. What is the temperature in the Sahara Desert?
  4. Does Jay think the temperature is hot or cold?
  5. What is the temperature in China?
  6. Does Jay think this temperature is hot or cold?
Scientific Tools and Inventions A Visit to the Lab
  1. What kind of scientist is an astronomer?
  2. What tool do the children use to take a closer look at a tomato plant?
  3. Why does the chemist wear goggles?
  4. What can scientists and inventors use computers to do?

Module Suggested Read Aloud Books:

Take time to read to your student or have them read aloud to you. Read a different book each day. While reading the book point out concepts being taught. You may purchase these books or find them at your local library. Suggested things to discuss while reading the book:

  • What is the main idea?
  • What are three things new you learned?
  • How does this book relate to what you are learning about?

# Book Author Lexile Level
1 Ada Twist, Scientist Andrea Beaty
2 I Use Science Tools Kelli Hicks
3 TinkerActive Workbooks: 1st Grade Science Megan Hewes Butler

Module Outing:

Take some time to apply what your student is learning to the real world. Suggested outings are below.

# Outing
1 Take your student to on a trip to your local hardware store to study common tools used to measure angles, lengths, and shapes. Your local library may have a STEM lab with some scientific tools that your student can use.
