Module 14: The Letter Dd- Language Arts K - Course Guide
Module Overview:
In this module, students will focus on the letter Dd, learning to identify its sound, form the letter correctly, and apply their letter-sound knowledge to decode words in the Decodable Book. They will also recognize and read high-frequency words such as did, down, and do with growing confidence. Phonemic awareness is strengthened through the creation and sorting of short-o word family words, identifying rhyming words, and exploring alliteration in texts. Students will build vocabulary and demonstrate understanding of new words encountered in reading and writing. In literacy comprehension, learners will compare and contrast poems, and practice identifying rhyme and alliteration. They will also deepen their understanding of sentence structure by learning to correctly use periods, question marks, and exclamation marks. By the end of the module, learners will be able to fluently read simple texts, recognize patterns in language, and express themselves through both oral and written activities.

Learning Coach Notes:
| Lesson # | Lesson Title | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 14.1 Letter Dd | Students will learn the letter Dd today. This can be a difficult letter sound to learn. Spend time on the Make the Sound page to help your learner understand their tongue placement to form the letter sound. You can help your child make the connection with the /t/ sound because these two phonemes are formed the same way. The difference is that the /t/ sound is unvoiced and the /d/ sound is voiced. |
| 2 | 14.2 Letter Dd | Your learner will continue practicing ear spelling, a skill learned earlier this year. Remember that ear spelling is phonetic spelling, or spelling the words the way they sound, not correct spelling. Refrain from telling your learner which letters to write. Your child will gain a much richer understanding of language, reading, and writing when strengthening their ear spelling skills. |
| 3 | 14.3 Letter Dd | Encourage your learner to create rhyming words in the word families they are learning this week. Provide a word (like hot) and ask your child to think of a word that rhymes. When a correct word is given, remind your learner that those two words are in the same word family. Use the Sound Book to continue reviewing all the sounds your child has learned so far. Use the Words of the Week Book to practice reading all the Heart Words and Flash Words learned so far. |
| 4 | 14.4 Letter Dd | Your learner will begin the lesson by creating a discovery box with objects that begin with the /d/ sound. If your child has trouble finding items, encourage him or her to draw them. For example, he or she could draw a dot on a piece of paper. You can also instruct your learner to cut pictures that begin with the /d/ sound out of newspapers or magazines. |
| 5 | 14.5 Letter Dd | Use this lesson to see what your learner has mastered and what skills require extra practice. Guide your learner through this lesson but refrain from providing answers. Your child’s teacher will use this lesson to understand how your child is learning. |
Module Guiding Questions:
When a student starts a lesson ask them questions to check for prior knowledge and understanding and to review concepts being taught. At the end of the lesson ask the questions again to see if their answer changes.

Module Suggested Read Aloud Books:
Take time to read to your student or have them read aloud to you. Read a different book each day. While reading the book point out concepts being taught. You may purchase these books or find them at your local library. Suggested things to discuss while reading the book:
- What is the main idea?
- What are three things new you learned?
- How does this book relate to what you are learning about?

Module Outing:
Take some time to apply what your student is learning to the real world. Suggested outings are below.
| # | Outing |
|---|---|
| 1 | Go to a park and have your learner write down all of the things they see that start with the Letter Dd, such as ducks or dogs. How many ducks can they find? How many dogs are being walked? Another possible outing would be to visit a local Doughnut shop and ask if they will show you how doughnuts are made. |
