Module Overview:

In this module, learners will dive into exciting stories to explore how characters, settings, and plots work together. We will focus on improving writing and language skills by learning to identify specific sounds in words, mastering verb tenses to make writing clearer, and practicing neat cursive handwriting. Learners will also work on a compare-and-contrast essay, where they will learn to organize their ideas, write a first draft, and polish their work for a final, finished version. By the end of the module, learners will be better at comparing different stories and writing their own clear, well-organized essays.

1 10.1 Adventure Awaits Review counting syllables as your learner begins practicing spelling words this week. Learners will use their understanding of stressed and unstressed syllables to identify the schwa sound. Students will focus on analyzing texts in this module using two stories by the same author: Jumanji and Zathura by Chris Van Allsburg. Be sure to locate these specific stories so that your learner can use them to compare and contrast. Encourage imaginative play during this module by prompting your learner to act out the Module Story, umanji, or Zathura.
2 10.2 Adventure Awaits To help your learner understand the concept of a sinkhole, which they will learn about on the “Did You Know?” page, demonstrate the formation of one using a tissue and an empty tissue box. Place the tissue over the tissue box, ensuring that the box’s opening is under the tissue. Tell your learner that the tissue is like the surface of the ground. The box is like a space underneath the ground. Poke a small hole in the tissue and then make the hole bigger to show the void, or empty space, that can form under the ground. Once the ground above the void erodes, the sinkhole forms. Have your learner sketch this process after they read the information to understand it better.
3 10.3 Adventure Awaits Students will continue to practice comparing and contrasting the stories <em>Zathura</em> and <em>Jumanji</em> today. Encourage your learner to think of other similar books and allow time for them to compare the settings, plot structures, and themes. Help your learner make connections between stories to reinforce the skill of comparing and contrasting.
4 10.4 Adventure Awaits As your learner practices spelling their spelling words, ask them to identify the schwa sound or sounds in each. Students continue to need access to the copies of Jumanji and Zathura that they checked out of the library or purchased earlier this week. Students will read each book again before reading summaries and comparing the books.
5 10.5 Adventure Awaits Your learner will use this lesson to test their understanding of the skills and concepts learned this week. Encourage them to repeat interactives to achieve mastery. Students will participate in a peer review of their writing project. Arrange for a partner or a peer to review their writing before beginning the lesson and encourage your learner to give the peer specific feedback on their essay.
