Module 23: Tomatoes- Science 1B - Course Guide

Module Overview:

In this module, students will learn how many foods use tomatoes, the structure of a plant, and the materials and steps needed to plant a tomato. Students will find problems to common solutions with growing plants, like pests, and learn about how plants adapt to protect themselves from predators. Students will be introduced to the engineering design cycle to learn how to problem solve.

Module Guiding Questions:

When a student starts a lesson ask them questions to check for prior knowledge and understanding and to review concepts being taught. At the end of the lesson ask the questions again to see if their answer changes.

Lesson Title Question
Planting a Tomato
  1. Where do tomatoes come from?
Tomato Task
  1. What is happening to the tomato plants?

Module Video Questions:

When a student watches a video take time to ask them questions about what they watched. Suggested questions for the videos in this module are listed here. Suggestion: Have the student watch the entire video first all the way through. Then have them watch the video a second time, as they watch it pause the video and ask the questions.

Lesson Title Video Question
Planting a Tomato Tomato Garden
  1. What materials are needed to plant a tomato?
  2. What is the first step of the plant's life cycle?
  3. Where should seeds and seedlings be planted?
  4. What happens after flowers grow on the plant?
  5. How long does it take to have a ripe tomato to eat?
Tomato Task Tomato Solutions
  1. What problems are Maddie and Kiara noticing with their tomato plants?
  2. What is the first step they take to solve the problem?
  3. How can knowing about other plants help find solutions for the tomato plant?
  4. What solution works to keep the deer away?
  5. What solution keeps the caterpillars away?

Module Suggested Read Aloud Books:

Take time to read to your student or have them read aloud to you. Read a different book each day. While reading the book point out concepts being taught. You may purchase these books or find them at your local library. Suggested things to discuss while reading the book:

  • What is the main idea?
  • What are three things new you learned?
  • How does this book relate to what you are learning about?

# Book Author Lexile Level
1 From Seed to Plant Gail Gibbons
2 Originals Explorers Plants: Twinkl
3 See a Plant Grow! Charlie W. Sterling

Module Outing:

Take some time to apply what your student is learning to the real world. Suggested outings are below.

# Outing
1 Take your student on a walk to look at gardens in your area. Discuss native species' plant adaptations and why they are suited to grow in your region. Point out the different stages of the life cycle during different seasons and how to care for plants during each season.
