Module 1- Math 1 - Course Guide

Module Overview:

In this module, students will strengthen their number skills by practicing counting from 0 to 9 and identifying missing numbers on a number line. They will group and count similar items, match sets to the correct numerals, and write numbers 1 through 9. Students will also explore creative ways to make numerals using common materials. By the end of the module, they will be confident in recognizing, writing, and counting numbers from 0 to 9.

Learning Coach Notes:

Lesson # Lesson Title Notes
1 From 0 to 9 To help your learner count to 9 using numerals, practice counting together out loud while pointing to each number from 0 to 9 on a number chart or number line. Use everyday objects—like crayons, coins, or snacks—and have your learner count them one by one, matching each total to the correct numeral card. Mix up numeral cards from 0 to 9 and ask your learner to arrange them in order. For extra fun, play “Number Hunt” by hiding numeral cards around the room and having your learner find them and place them in order while counting.
2 Number Line: Missing Numbers To help your learner find missing numbers from 0 to 9 on a number line, start by showing them a complete number line and counting together from 0 to 9. Then, use a number line with some numbers covered or removed and ask your learner to figure out which numbers are missing. Encourage them to count forward and backward to help find the answer. You can also write numbers on sticky notes, leave some spaces blank, and have your learner fill in the missing numbers. For a hands-on activity, draw a large number line on the floor with tape, remove a few numerals, and have your learner stand in the correct spots for the missing numbers.
3 Counting Groups To help your learner group and count similar items, gather a variety of small objects such as buttons, blocks, coins, or toy animals. Ask your learner to sort the items into groups based on something they have in common, such as color, shape, or size. Once the items are sorted, have your learner count each group and say the total aloud. You can mix up the items and repeat the activity using a different sorting rule. For a fun challenge, have your learner guess which group will have the most items before counting, then compare the totals together.
4 Name that Numeral To help your learner write the correct numeral for a given set, provide small objects such as beads, buttons, or blocks. Place a set of objects (for example, 4 blocks) in front of them and ask them to write the numeral that matches the quantity. Repeat with different numbers from 1 through 9. For a creative twist, have your learner form numerals using common materials like string, clay, pipe cleaners, or craft sticks before writing them with pencil and paper. Encourage them to say the number aloud each time to reinforce the connection between the written numeral and the amount it represents.
5 Module 1 Wrap Up To review counting from 0 to 9, have your learner practice saying the numbers aloud while pointing to them on a number chart or number line. Mix up the order by asking them to count forward starting from numbers other than 0 (for example, “Let’s start at 3 and count to 9”). Use everyday items like snacks, toys, or coins to count together, reinforcing each number as they touch or move an object. You can also play simple games, such as holding up fingers and asking your learner to count them, or asking, “What number comes next?” to strengthen their recall of the sequence.

Module Guiding Questions:

When a student starts a lesson ask them questions to check for prior knowledge and understanding and to review concepts being taught. At the end of the lesson ask the questions again to see if their answer changes.

Module Video Questions:

When a student watches a video take time to ask them questions about what they watched. Suggested questions for the videos in this module are listed here. Suggestion: Have the student watch the entire video first all the way through. Then have them watch the video a second time, as they watch it pause the video and ask the questions.

Module Suggested Read Aloud Books:

Take time to read to your student or have them read aloud to you. Read a different book each day. While reading the book point out concepts being taught. You may purchase these books or find them at your local library. Suggested things to discuss while reading the book:

  • What is the main idea?
  • What are three things new you learned?
  • How does this book relate to what you are learning about?
