Module Overview:

In this module, learners will travel the world to explore "Winter Holidays Worldwide" while strengthening their reading and writing abilities. We will focus on new spelling patterns for the long "u" sound and learn how to use contractions and modal verbs to add precision and flow to our writing. A central part of our work will be comparing and contrasting two different holidays, where learners will research information, organize their thoughts, and write a polished essay. Throughout the unit, learners will also practice citing evidence from nonfiction texts to support their ideas and continue refining their cursive handwriting with the uppercase letters H and K.

1	17.1 Winter Holidays Worldwide	Students will learn many new skills this week! The Module’s focus, winter holidays around the world, will provide opportunities for your learner to work with nonfiction texts. Students will compare and contrast texts on the same topic. Students will learn three grammar skills this week. As they practice using apostrophes in possessive nouns and contractions, provide elbow noodles for your learner to use as manipulatives to practice! They can place the manipulatives in the correct place on white boards or paper to show how to use apostrophes.
2	17.2 Winter Holidays Worldwide	Encourage your learner to use their vocabulary words throughout the day to increase their understanding. Create a vocabulary chart where your learner can give themselves a tally mark each time they use a word correctly in speaking or writing. Students deepen their skills as they practice comparing and contrasting two texts on the same topic. Encourage your learner to read the texts a few times before they begin comparing and contrasting them.
3	17.3 Winter Holidays Worldwide	To give your learner extra practice with their spelling words, have them create a spelling sort. Guide them to write the three vowel teams (<em>oo, ew, ui</em>) on three different notecards. Then, they will write each spelling word on a notecard. Show your learner how to create a sort by putting each spelling word in the correct vowel team pile. Time them to see if they can use their sorting skills faster each time!
4	17.4 Winter Holidays Worldwide	Students will continue to practice the skills learned this week by applying their learning. They will read two passages on the same topic to practice comparing and contrasting them. Encourage your learner to write their answers in complete sentences. Then, they will find modal auxiliary verbs, possessive nouns, and contractions in short passages to determine if these words are used correctly. Engage your learner in conversation about what they read and write to help them develop their critical thinking and reach conclusions.
5	17.5 Winter Holidays Worldwide	Students will show what they have learned throughout the week. As your learner reads two texts on two winter holidays, encourage them to use a Venn diagram to organize information as they compare and contrast the texts.
