Module 2- Math 1 - Course Guide
Module Overview:
In this module, students will practice recognizing and naming numerals from 0 to 10 and counting sets of objects within that range. They will learn to identify and fill in missing numbers when counting both forward and backward. Students will explore different ways to represent numbers, including using numerals, pictures, tallies, objects, movements, and simple addition or subtraction expressions. Finally, they will count from 0 to 20 with confidence and use counting skills to find missing numbers in a sequence.

Learning Coach Notes:
| Lesson # | Lesson Title | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Numbers: 0 To 10 | Help your learner practice identifying numerals from 0 to 10 by pointing them out in everyday life—on clocks, signs, books, and calendars. Use household items (buttons, blocks, snacks) to create small sets of 0–10 objects and have your learner count them aloud. Encourage them to touch or move each item as they count to build one-to-one matching skills. Mix up the order of the numbers to be sure they can recognize them out of sequence. Celebrate correct counting and numeral recognition with praise or small rewards. |
| 2 | Numbers the Bones | Support your learner in practicing counting by asking them to fill in missing numbers in a sequence. You can write number lines with blanks (e.g., 1, 2, __, 4) or use objects and ask, “How many are missing?” Encourage your learner to say the numbers aloud as they fill in the blanks. Mix up sequences going forward and backward to strengthen their understanding of number order. Praise their efforts and gently guide them if they need help remembering the next number. |
| 3 | Represent Numbers | Encourage your learner to explore numbers in different ways. Have them represent numbers using objects, drawings, tallies, and numerals. Make it active by letting them show numbers with movement, like jumping or clapping a certain number of times. You can also introduce simple addition and subtraction expressions to represent numbers in a new way. Ask your learner to explain or show their thinking so they connect the different representations and understand that numbers can be expressed in many forms. |
| 4 | Count It! | Help your learner practice counting from 0 to 20 by using objects, number lines, or verbal counting. Ask them to find missing numbers in a sequence by counting aloud and identifying which number comes next or is missing. Encourage counting both forward and backward to strengthen their number sense. Use everyday situations—like counting steps, toys, or snacks—to make counting meaningful and fun. Praise their efforts and guide them gently if they skip or miss a number. |
| 5 | Module 2 Wrap Up | Support your learner in reviewing counting from 0 to 20 by practicing sequences of numbers aloud and with objects. Ask them to identify missing numbers in a sequence while counting both up and down. Use number lines, cards, or everyday items to make the practice hands-on and engaging. Encourage your learner to say each number clearly and check their answers by counting forward or backward. Celebrate their progress and provide gentle guidance if they need help remembering the order. |
Module Guiding Questions:
When a student starts a lesson ask them questions to check for prior knowledge and understanding and to review concepts being taught. At the end of the lesson ask the questions again to see if their answer changes.

Module Video Questions:
When a student watches a video take time to ask them questions about what they watched. Suggested questions for the videos in this module are listed here. Suggestion: Have the student watch the entire video first all the way through. Then have them watch the video a second time, as they watch it pause the video and ask the questions.

Module Suggested Read Aloud Books:
Take time to read to your student or have them read aloud to you. Read a different book each day. While reading the book point out concepts being taught. You may purchase these books or find them at your local library. Suggested things to discuss while reading the book:
- What is the main idea?
- What are three things new you learned?
- How does this book relate to what you are learning about?
